Conference scholarships for law enforcement

Special care, treatment available to sexual assault victims

Short- and long-term medical care and counseling are available to victims of sexual assault."We want every victim of sexual assault to receive health care. We encourage them. But it's up to that victim to decide," said Michele Barber, the Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention medical management program coordinator for the Army's Western Regional Medical Command. Barber's area of responsibility includes much of the western United States, which she manages from WRMC headquarters at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. But she said training and care provided by hospital staffs and counselors is standard across the Army, not only for Soldiers, but for family members and all Department of Defense beneficiaries.
Alaska communities join forces to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault

Community members from Alaska towns as large as Anchorage and as small as Allakaket are in Juneau for the second annual Prevention Summit sponsored by the Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. The council is under the state Department of Public Safety. The three-day summit at Centennial Hall brings together teams from 19 communities. Each team has at least three members. “They’re victim service providers, first responders such as maybe law enforcement or healthcare providers, tribal representatives, as well as just people interested in preventing violence in their community,” says council executive director Lauree Morton.
Kenya rape case must bring an end to impunity for violence against women

What else needs to happen to make us rise up and say enough is enough as rape and other gender crimes continue to rise? Just how many more women and girls have to become rape statistics before we can get truly angry about it? Does a healthy society allow its daughters to be raped? Does our silent complacency send out a message that we are a society that condones such acts?”
Forensic Compliance in Colorado: An Examination of System Response to Sexual Assault

The Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CCASA) recently released a report that serves as a model for others states entitled, Forensic Compliance in Colorado: An Examination of System Response to Sexual Assault. In 2008, in response to a federal mandate, Colorado passed state statute ensuring that victims can access free medical forensic exams, regardless of their reporting decisions. This report examines the current response to these victims and the overall efficacy of the implementation of the law. Through quantitative analysis of adult forensic compliance cases and quantitative and qualitative surveys of professional responders to adult sexual assault cases – Colorado’s medical professionals, victim advocates, law enforcement officers, and prosecutors – this report outlines recommendations applicable at both the local and state level.
Colombia steps up campaign to stop FGM among Embera Indians

Colombia is pushing ahead with a national campaign to eradicate female genital mutilation (FGM) among the country’s Embera indigenous tribe, to prevent physical injury and even death that can result from the procedure, the United Nations has said. Since the 2007 death of a newborn Embera girl from an infection after undergoing FGM, Colombian authorities and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) have been working with several Embera communities in the country’s western Risaralda province to eradicate the practice.
US plans new strategies to check violence against women in Nigeria

The United States government is planning new strategies to prevent and respond to violence against women in Nigeria. At an event to commemorate the 16 days campaign on violence against women in Abuja, the Deputy Chief of Missions of the United States Embassy in Nigeria, Maria Brewer, described the rising cases of violence against women globally as worrisome. In different works of art, students in the Federal Capital Territory depicted what violence against women meant to them, an unusual way adopted by the U.S. to commemorate the 2013 International Day Against Domestic Violence.
921 rape kits awaiting analysis, authorities struggling with backlog

The authorities are struggling to clear up a backlog of testing to be conducted on rape kits. Leader of Government Business in the Senate, Senator A.J. Nicholson, has disclosed that there are 921 rape kits which are awaiting analysis at the government forensic lab. Senator Nicholson says it is expected that it will take a year to clear up the backlog.
