On Feb. 9 in Miramar, Florida, IAPSC member Randy Atlas, Ph.D., FAIA, CPP, will give a presentation discussing active shooters in buildings and conflicts between security goals of lock down and shelter in place, and safety concerns of inappropriate hardware that prevents access to rooms from law enforcement and EMS, thus resulting in Life Safety Code violations.

In recent years, after working with dozens of hospitals and clinics across the U.S., I’ve identified trends, and related best practices, regarding healthcare security and especially the prevention, mitigation and response to violence. When I interview staff, from nurses and registrars to CEO’s, the concern over violence always arises. Too often aggressive, threatening and assaultive behavior by patients and family members is shrugged off as hazards of the job that nobody can do anything about.

The Interest Groups facilitate member relationship-building across areas of specialty and interest. They provide new opportunities for IAPSC members to survey the needs of the membership in their specialized areas and discuss current topics, best practices and guidelines, challenges members are experiencing, and trends in the industry. These groups may also be a forum for collaborating on working group projects, seminars, and networking activities. It's easy to participate in the monthly teleconference from your computer or your phone, via GoToMeeting.
We hope to connect with you at an upcoming Interest Group session:
February 19 @ 9am PDT — Forensics and Security Management

Meanwhile, the snow and rain from heavy winter storms in the northern U.S. overwhelmed rivers and tributaries, causing flooding along the Mississippi River in Missouri and Mississippi.
