Job site safety is important to your workers, your company and you. Making sure your workers have the knowledge they need to keep them safe is the first step to building a culture of safety within your company. In fact, as part of an effective health and safety program, your workers should participate in regularly scheduled meetings to discuss safety on the work site.

NAHB's analysis of August regional employment data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that states with the highest annual growth rates of total construction employment are Iowa (18.68 percent), Hawaii (12.25 percent) and Colorado (11.31 percent). The total number of workers in construction reached 6.7 million nationwide, up by 3.13 percent annually. At the same time, the largest construction jobs gains happened in California (29,300), Florida (22,000) and Colorado (16,800).

We continue to receive mixed messages about the current state of the manufacturing sector, ranging from rebounding demand and production in the Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) survey to lingering weaknesses in the job market. We will start with some positives. After unexpectedly contracting in the prior release, the ISM’s Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index rose from 49.4 in August to 51.5 in September, expanding for the sixth time in the past seven months. This suggests that the August reading was a bit of an outlier, particularly with new orders recovering strongly and with modest growth in production and exports. The report mostly supports the notion that manufacturing activity has stabilized but expanding at a still-sluggish pace. Yet, the report also continued to reflect ongoing challenges, including job growth and inventories.

The Federal Reserve held short-term interest rates constant last month, as expected, but the next rate hike is likely not far away. NAHB predicts rates will rise at the Federal Open Market Committee's upcoming meeting in December, one year after the first rate increase of this cycle occurred. Despite these expected increases, mortgage rates should remain relatively low throughout the next few years, supporting continued growth in the demand for housing.
Unlike the recent slowing of existing home sales, new home sales should continue to expand. August recorded the second-highest annual rate of new, single-family home sales since the end of the recession. And the low inventory —currently at just a 4.6 months' supply —points to an uptick in construction ahead, consistent with the growing amount of confidence among builders.
NAHB
According to estimates from Census Construction Spending data, total private residential construction spending edged down 0.3 percent in August to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $449.2 billion. The record-breaking gains registered by multifamily construction were not enough to offset the declines in both single-family and home improvement spending.
