ABC News via Yahoo News

As Americans flocked to the Sundance Film Festival, the NFL playoffs and the Presidential Inauguration, the weekend could have been big for the flu. About 35,000 Americans have been sickened by an early and nasty wave of influenza, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And while the outbreak appears to be abating, flu activity is still widespread. "Our biggest concern is people coming in asymptomatic but carrying the virus," said Rob Allen, chief executive officer of Park City Hospital in Park City, Utah, the home of Sundance.

Sheffield Telegraph

Financial pressures are tightening on Sheffield, England's big music festival, Tramlines, with organizers indicating that they are preparing to charge for some elements for the first time. On top of a halving of council grant, it was revealed that the festival's main sponsor, the mobile phone company Nokia, is expected to pull out. Tramlines, which has grown over three years to attract crowds of 165,000 over a weekend in July, is one of several Sheffield major events that will share some of the pain from the council's budget cuts of £50 million over the next year.

Ice was as precious as the medals at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival as Australia's rising stars battled not only rivals from around the world but heatwave conditions.
