ESPN is now participating in a music industry competition known as rate-setting.
On Thursday, the sports network filed suit against Broadcast Music, Inc., an outfit which licenses the performing rights to many published songs. In a petition in New York federal court, ESPN says that "unlike typical television networks," it "acquires music rights through direct licenses, i.e., licenses obtained directly from songwriters, music publishers and music libraries that include all rights as may be required ... or through 'work made for hire' agreements with songwriters."

Legendary producer Ric Birch is no longer playing any role in the Rio 2016 Olympic or Paralympic Games after vacating his role in a row over budget cuts, he has revealed.
Birch, who played a major role in Ceremonies at the Barcelona 1992, Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics as well as at the Turin 2006 Winter edition, is regarded as the "Master of Ceremonies" worldwide due to his role in producing so many major large events.

Inside the Games
Spectators who have bought tickets for this year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will not be assigned specific seats for many events after Brazilian officials decided to introduce a general admission policy.
The news was revealed to client groups in an update sent by Rio 2016.
The decision affects all the Deodoro venues and the Riocentro Pavillions.
Among the sports affected will be badminton, boxing, equestrian, hockey, rugby sevens, shooting, table tennis and weightlifting.

According to an economic impact report released by the event's parent company exclusively to Forbes this afternoon, the Las Vegas version of electronic music festival Electric Daisy Carnival has brought an estimated $1.3 billion to Clark County, which contains Sin City, in the five years since it first arrived.
Last year, the fifth edition of the Las Vegas staging of Electric Daisy Carnival brought in an incredible $350 million on its own. That number is a huge jump from 2011, when that same metric was less than half of what it is now.
