Chicago hopes to set minds, hearts on fire with new riverfront event

Chicago will remember some old flames with a new festival. The inaugural Great Chicago Fire Festival, commemorating the famous conflagration of 1871 and the city's subsequent rebirth, is slated for October 2014 and is expected to become an annual event. Held along the Chicago River between Columbus Drive and Michigan Avenue, it will feature "acrobatics, live music, fantastical machines and flaming floats," organizers said.

Indio inching closer to expanding Goldenvoice music festivals

Goldenvoice, the producer of Coachella Fest and Stagecoach Country Music Festival, presented its "Environmental Impact Report" to the Indio, Calif., planning commission at a special meeting. The commission approved the EIR and voted 5-0 in support of the group's request to host more festivals.
British Airways gig in the sky sets new world record

British Airways has set a new world record for the highest ever gig, with 1980's superstars Tony Hadley and Kim Wilde performing for passengers at 43,000 feet. The flight also set a record for the world's highest ever "Harlem Shake," the dance meme that has become a huge worldwide phenomenon. The special flight was organized to raise money for British Airways' "Flying Start," their special partnership program with Comic Relief. The Boeing 767 aircraft used for the event was specially adapted with a red nose.

Where the Heart Is could be Melbourne, Australia's most exclusive event — it's run by the Royal District Nursing Service for homeless people only. In its 10th year, the event, held all day at Edinburgh Gardens in North Fitzroy, was strictly alcohol free. But it boasted free entry, free food and drink and free services such as massages, photography and dog grooming; the services were provided by 174 volunteers.

Music festivals, cultural events chosen for €1.3 million funding from Romania National Cultural Fund

Several festivals and cultural events organized in Romania recently won financing from the Administration of the National Cultural Fund, which in total awarded prizes of some €1.3 million. The fund awarded some €92,000 — for the Art of Show — dance. Meanwhile, the eXplore Dance Festival received €14,000, which was among the highest individual prizes in this category.
