I am sure that most of you have been following the tragic explosions near the Boston Marathon finish line with a mix of shock, sadness and concern for how to prevent something similar from ever happening at your own events. Let me begin by expressing our sincere concern and sympathies for all those directly and indirectly impacted by these senseless acts.

Kentucky Derby, Derby Festival security to be reviewed in wake of Boston Marathon explosions

It's too soon to say whether the explosions at the Boston Marathon will result in security changes for the Kentucky Derby and Derby Festival — but thunder over Louisville will go on as planned, officials said. "We will huddle with our many law enforcement partners" over the coming days to review security plans for the May 4 event, said Churchill Downs spokesman John Asher. "That's something we do every year, especially since 2002."

London Marathon to utilize 'bomb-proof' trash bins

London Marathon organizers are preparing to step up security arrangements in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing, with new bomb-proof trash bins set to protect runners and spectators. The London Marathon will see 100 of the hi-tech bins installed along the race's 26-mile route. The bins, which were originally introduced for the 2012 Olympic Games, are made by Renew. The company describes the five-foot-high units as "blast mitigating" recycling "pods."
Boston attack leads sports-event insurers to reassess business

The Boston Marathon bombings may cause a surge in the cost of insuring global sporting events, while changing the way organizers manage risk, according to Bob Murphy, global entertainment and events practice leader at Marsh & McLennan Cos. Marsh Inc. "This has absolutely shaken sports industry underwriters," Murphy said in a telephone interview. "People are asking, 'Do we even want to underwrite these events? If we do, what are the underwriting data that we need to see to protect our risk? We're going to have ramifications in terms of limits and pricing.'"

After Boston bombing, more security at Grand Prix, Festival of Books

Authorities plan to beef up security at major events such as this weekend's Long Beach Grand Prix and the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing.
