2014 Rose Festival evolves and adapts to a 21st century Portland
The Oregonian
Celebrating its 107th year, Portland, Oregon's Rose Festival has plenty of tradition. But as organizers grow and evolve the festival every year, they need to stay on top of their game to keep the festival relevant in our modern community. It is still pretty emotional up here," said Martha Rasmussen, one of the organizers of Darrington Day, May 31. Ultimately, Rasmussen said, her group decided that going ahead with a day to celebrate local arts, music, heritage and civic accomplishment made more sense than scrapping it.

Ferry tragedy undermines South Korea economic 'miracle'
The West Australian
South Korea's ferry disaster has had a profound psychological impact on Asia's fourth-largest economy, shaking public confidence in the very foundations of the country's "miracle" development model. Number of New Orleans parades due to shrink gradually to 30
The New Orleans Advocate
Future Carnival seasons could contain fewer parades in an effort to "create a safer parading atmosphere," under new rules passed recently by the New Orleans City Council. The latest changes follow about a half-dozen rules changes approved before the 2014 Carnival celebration. The earlier amendments to the ordinance governing Carnival included provisions banning spectators from roping off any portion of a neutral ground, street or sidewalk along a parade route; placing ladders, tents or grills within six feet of a curb during a parade; and positioning a portable toilet on public property along a parade route without written permission from the city.

Bloomberg
The two boys had knives. So Carlos Guzman handed over his wedding ring, iPhone and wallet. What really galled him was that the police said they knew where one of the boys lived, yet took no action. Festival's 25th is bittersweet
Twin Cities Times
The upcoming Larkspur Flower and Food Festival will undoubtedly elicit mixed emotions, as the celebration's 25th year will likely be its last due to financial constraints. Honoring the city's downtown vibrancy through music, food, fine arts and, of course, flowers, the annual gathering was established by the Larkspur Community Association in 1990 as a way to celebrate and support business on Magnolia Avenue. As the years passed, the event's popularity grew — and so did expenses.

Get your music festival fix without paying sky-high prices
The Guardian

Guardian Money found that some are paying almost double what they were a decade or less ago for the same event. But if you are looking for some festival action there are scores of cheaper/free events around.
