Tens of thousands evacuated as high winds threaten music Lollapalooza fest

The Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago was suspended and tens of thousands of fans were evacuated to shelters as the city braced for dangerous storms with high winds, organizers said. Organizers stopped at about 2:30 p.m. and many of the fans were told to go to one of three underground parking garages designated as "emergency evacuation shelters," the Los Angeles Times reported. Great British Festivals map revealed

An interactive map pinpointing more than 500 commercial music festivals in the U.K. has been unveiled by U.K. Music and Visit Britain. Together, the festivals contribute £864 million to the British economy and attract 7.7 million fans each year, according to U.K. Music. Of that figure, 357,000 are international music fans who contribute £247 million to the economy, 18 percent of total music tourist spending. More

Olympic venues are supposed to be free of sponsor ads, but night after night BMW's iconic Mini car is right there in the middle of the main stadium at the London Games. The automaker is deploying miniature remote-controlled versions of the car to move track and field equipment around the Olympic Stadium. The IOC's in-house broadcaster has regularly zoomed in on the radio-controlled cars and sent images to networks around the world, giving BMW global exposure of its brand. More

Major sponsors are delighted with how London has staged the Games while the enthusiasm generated by the success of the British team is also a plus, International Olympic Committee Marketing Chief Gerhard Heiberg said. Britain had a strong record of organizing big sporting events and the IOC had always been confident it would put on a good show, Heiberg said, but the growing tally of British gold medals has lifted the atmosphere in London. Brian Mattson and Tom Deacher climbed into their truck and got set to leave saturated Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania. That's when the lightning bolt slammed into a tent canopy just a couple of rows away from where they parked, shooting off sparks like a Roman candle. The NASCAR fans jumped out and found two men on the ground. Deacher and others tried to administer CPR until paramedics arrived. More

With the city of Memphis, Tenn.,'s budget nearly stretched to the limit, it makes sense for city officials to look for ways to save money and to have a more consistent policy to recoup, where applicable, the costs of services it provides for a wide range of events. City Attorney Herman Morris is spearheading an effort to develop a fair and transparent policy, using a number of verifiable factors, to determine how much event organizers should pay for using city services, such as police and public works. Musikfest was preparing to hit a high note in 2011, introducing the 10-day party of music and food to south Bethlehem at its ambitious new SteelStacks campus. But rain doused the festival for six days, flooding the Monocacy Creek and closing down nearby venues on the north side. The festival lost $750,000 — triple the amount of its worst year since it began 28 years ago. More
