Austin, Texas, to take over sponsorship of First Night

Austin City Manager Marc Ott announced that the Texas capital will step in to sponsor and organize First Night Austin, the family-friendly arts-centered downtown New Year's Eve celebration, after organizers announced that they were canceling the event. How much money the city will spend on the event has yet to be determined, a spokesperson for the city said. More

Churchill suspends HullabaLou festival

Churchill Downs Inc. announced that its HullabaLou Music Festival — which lost $5 million in its inaugural event in July — will not return in 2011. In a news release, the Louisville, Ky.,-based racetrack operator also said that it has dissolved its Churchill Downs Entertainment Group, costing four people their jobs. More

State park systems are looking to corporate money

Volunteering in state parks long has been a staple of the Boy Scouts experience. But in Georgia this year, as the Boy Scouts celebrate their 100th anniversary by building bridges and park benches, maintaining trails and cleaning up waterways, the ongoing event is unusual in one respect: It's sponsored by Verizon Wireless. The company is providing funding for tools and supplies as the Scouts perform service projects around the state. In exchange, Georgia is recognizing Verizon Wireless in publicity materials and on the Georgia Department of Natural Resources website. More

Billionaire delivers free festival to San Francisco

For three days, Golden Gate Park in San Francisco was packed with musical icons, a billionaire's generosity and an eclectic audience that came together to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Spectators camped out on picnic blankets and enjoyed the free festivities, all financed by equity firm tycoon and bluegrass enthusiast Warren Hellman. "(I like) that you have little babies, guys tripping out, good food and drink and cops looking stupid," said Ingo Duarte, 29, of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, who was visiting Hardly Strictly and the U.S. for the first time. "This festival is better than I could've ever expected." More

Super Bowl host committee's founding sponsorships drop from $1 million to $717,000

A million-dollar sponsorship of the Super Bowl XLV host committee has now gotten a bit cheaper. The seven-figure founding sponsorships are now priced at $717,000 as the game is just a little more than four months away. Committee president and CEO Bill Lively said the price was reduced since some perks – trips to other Super Bowls and seats to the concert series – have passed. More

Code enforcers to look for illegal vendors outside of Austin City Limits Festival

Public Assembly Code Enforcement team will be out in force at the perimeter of the Austin City Limits Music Festival in Texas. For the second year in a row, code enforcers will be looking for vendors and music stages without permits. Involved on the PACE Team will be members of the Austin Police Department, Austin Fire Department, the Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department and the City of Austin Parking Enforcement.
