Work Design Magazine

Today, professional services firms – law, finance, tax, and accounting – are also transforming their workplaces and organizational cultures to operate more like their progressive counterparts. These traditional companies are finding value in adopting a transformative approach to office design. Law firms, in particular, are adapting the design of their spaces to adjust to new trends in the profession.

"Nature brings great value to our lives," says Sonja Bonchart, an interior designer who integrates principles into her work. "Connection to the land is biophilia ... there's a wild quality in nature we're drawn to." The idea is simple. When you’re hiking or watching a nature video, you feel better. Blood pressure drops and parasympathetic healing activates. Sterile modern buildings such as office towers cut us off from that. And we spend, according to Bochart, 90 percent of our time indoors.

For children especially, hospital stays are not usually fun, which is why British designer Morag Myerscough sought to create artful spaces that let patients know that they are being cared for and thought of.
Working closely with Sheffield Children's Hospital in England and Avanti Architects, who built the new spaces, Myerscough designed four bright and graphic schemes that feature in 46 patient rooms and six multi-occupancy suites. Created with children of all ages in mind, the designer behind the eponymous studio made sure that the rooms did not feel childish.

It’s just one element – so tiny that it’s often an afterthought when designing a restaurant – but winterization can change a dining experience. There’s good reason that’s one of the worst seats in the house.

It's not an optical illusion – the glass inside the creative agency Canvas Worldwide's new Los Angeles office does change throughout the day. Like a visual mood ring, the iridescent expanse changes its gradient sheen depending on the time of day and the angle you see the glass. If Rainbow Brite were an account exec, she'd request this for her office.
