In bars, the counter and stools are placed at a height that puts those sitting and standing at the same eye-level. The height of the counter and matching stools is so well established at between 40 to 42 inches that it’s known as “bar height.” Eliminating this 12-inch difference naturally engineers conversations between strangers who are now both sitting and standing face-to-face. That 12-inch difference makes casual conversations much more likely to happen. By this logic, in order to facilitate communication and collaboration, we should make our workplaces more like bars. In fact, ergonomics can optimize both human performance and the use of technology for improved efficiencies and reduced costs. That is, costs associated with injuries, lost time, insurance claims, and generally wasteful work layouts and methods.

The architects at the Madrid-based firm Selgascano are well acquainted with the power of plants. At the 2012 Venice Biennale, they orchestrated an artful pavilion of hydroponically grown greenery. Their own office is sunken into the forest floor, which naturally insulates the structure and can help fuel creativity by communing with nature. The office goes all-in on biophilic design, which encourages a connection between people and nature. Brimming with more than 2,000 individual plants and trees from 100 different species – such as tillandsias, philodendrons, and monsteras – the collection is watered and manicured by a team of local gardeners.

Dentists know this, so some smart ones are using design to ease the anxieties of their patients – and attract new ones. Instead of cold, clinical environments, these doctors favor warm, naturally lit Scandinavian spaces with personal touches.

Clearly, to thrive in this new world of work will require different skill-sets, mindsets, and tool-sets. Chief among them: the need to bring people together as a team, the need to demonstrate deeper empathy, and the ability to get new things done. Innovation in the next economy is about much more than inventing. It’s about figuring out how and where you can add unique value. It’s about how fast you can unlearn, relearn, and master new skills. It’s about how you engage others at a deeper, more humanistic and passionate level.
