Swedish brand BAUX produces environmentally friendly acoustic panels. Since launching, they have worked with brands such as Google, Amazon, Stella McCartney, WeWork, Spotify, Uber, Airbnb, and Nike, to bring acoustic peace to retail spaces, homes, and workplaces. BAUX’s Stockholm stand even resembles a classical temple, with arched frescoes that are made up of BAUX sound absorbers, all created by Johan Ronnestam in collaboration with design studio Form Us With Love.

From modernism’s chain of stylistic ruptures to recent discontinuities caused by so-called smart city design, architecture’s history has long been predicated on schisms and fractures, often created for disruption’s sake. Today, however, a new wave of feminists is producing a welcome correction to masculinist values in architecture. In publications and exhibitions—including the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation’s “Pioneering Women of American Architecture” internet project (2014) and the “Frau Architekt” (2017–18) show at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt—curators, historians, and writers are recovering the various roles women have played in architecture over the past 150 years.

Space has never been an issue at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa, Indian Wells in California. The surprise, though, is the “boutique-like experience within the large property,” says General Manager Christoph Roshardt, who helped spearhead the renovation along with SVP and Global Brand Leader Brian Povinelli. For that, credit SFA Design. With offices in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, the studio renovated all guest accommodations, corridors, and the lobby, revolving around a seven-story atrium. As principal Rosie Feinberg observes, it went from “a lot of brown and taupe” to a scene bursting with Palm Springs life. Color and all new furnishings are the keys.

It’s hard not to pay more attention to our physical realm these days given the fact so many of us are sheltering in place, or are likely to be doing so soon. Anecdotally, at least, DIY home improvement projects are on the rise; if you’re like me, your closet has never been better organized. For many in the design community, however, the rapid spread of COVID-19 has caused them to reevaluate their life’s work, and what it might mean to design for a world that will never be quite the same, especially when it comes to how we gather in and use large public spaces, like airports, hotels, hospitals, gyms, and offices.

Prague’s Typika “is a specialty café with care for locally-sourced, raw ingredients," says Alexandra Georgescu who designed the space with her cohorts at Czech firm KOGAA Studio. The aesthetic is similar: local and raw.
The café’s 1,700-square-foot space is divided into three zones, “all built by hand from local suppliers and makers,” she notes, including the communal table up front, central freestanding coffee station, and soft seating in the back.

In 2005, the cast of The Office settled into a nondescript office space in Culver City, California, for a read-through of the pilot episode. When the actors were finished, studio and network executives asked to see the show’s set. You’re sitting in it, they were told. Therein lies the magic of The Office, which premiered 15 years ago on March 24 and still maintains a fiercely devoted following long after going off the air. The series followed employees at the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and found joy and heartache in life’s small, ordinary moments. In order for that to happen, a hyper-realistic world needed to be built.
