The shipping container is a versatile building block for architects and real estate developers. The modular vessel can be fashioned into trendy and hip shipping container homes, a shipping container Starbucks, or an architecture studio. In Round Top, Texas, Matt White and his team from Recycling The Past have taken six shipping containers and turned them into the Flophouze Hotel.

Light-up walls, mirrored partitions, and colorful stone surfaces help channel a "cool bar" aesthetic inside this dental office in Berlin, which has been completed by Studio Karhard—the designers of renowned nightclub Berghain.
Owned by three young dentists, the interiors of The Urban Dentist are hip and conceptual, a familiar aesthetic for Studio Karhard. "We wanted to create an atmosphere where patients could feel relaxed and fearless,” said the studio’s founders Thomas Karsten and Alexandra Erhard. “We tried to avoid typical dentist colors like white and glossy surfaces."

What is 3den? It’s hard to tell from the outside, where it appears to be a luxe, high-tech airport lounge that’s not in an airport, complete with an iPad where you scan a QR code to gain access. But once you walk in and begin exploring the plant-filled space, you’ll discover it also has a meditation and yoga room, high tables specifically designed for you to work standing up, and bathrooms and showers complete with free products from brands like Cora (for tampons and pads) and Hello (for oral care). There is free coffee, soundproof phone booths, an abundance of power outlets, and even two Casper nap pods.

“We like to have fun, and this is the perfect backdrop,” says Project Interiors founder and lead designer Aimee Wertepny, describing the firm’s studio in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood. After purchasing the 6,200-square-foot building with bow-truss ceilings in 2017, Wertepny commissioned the Project Interiors office to collaborate on a major renovation. A new 60-foot operable skylight floods the interior with sunshine, highlighting the gold acrylic paint inlaid into the cracked concrete floors and covered with clear epoxy—“in anticipation of stiletto strutting, dance parties, and who knows what else,” Wertepny says.

It’s fitting that the architect Michael Hsu’s big break came through a restaurant: Both of his parents owned and worked in eateries in the U.S. and Taiwan. Hsu’s mom, a classically trained chef, had owned a noodle shop in Taiwan, and when the family moved to Houston, Hsu spent time at the restaurant she worked in there. In 1988, he moved to Austin to study engineering at the University of Texas, but upon finding his roommate’s architecture work more interesting, he switched majors.
Hsu cut his teeth at OMA’s Rotterdam office, where he worked for a year, and by the mid-1990s was working with the late Dick Clark, then Austin’s most prominent architect, who had helped define the city’s rustic Modernism.
