Offices are characterized by "balanced" layouts, with various types of furniture, arranged similarly to hotel lounges or even homes.

When you first think of airport design, there are numerous considerations: Traffic flows, landing space for planes, retail, and how to keep people moving in and out of the space efficiently. By using the IEMS to lighten the mood and infuse some pleasure back into the travel experience, LAX is providing a powerful model of what can be accomplished with strategic planning and forethought.

Rick McCormack, designer for the new Ritz Prime Seafood restaurant in Newport Beach, California, addressed one complaint frequently heard from restaurant goers: Noise levels in new restaurants like the Ritz and The Winery. "There's a fine line between too noisy and too quiet. Everyone wants an energetic atmosphere, and that happened at The Winery," he says. McCormack explained that noise issues had to be addressed there after the fact, using acoustical material and consulting with an acoustical engineer. In the case of the Ritz, a great deal of money went into acoustical materials, including a perforated wood ceiling that acts as an acoustical damper.

The interior design curriculum is going to go through a major shift in the next two to three years across all of North America, according to assistant professor of interior design Jonathon Anderson. That shift is attributed to new technologies that are becoming more readily available, such as computer numeric controlled routers, 3-D printing, laser cutters, advanced digital software, and scripting software. "So there's a technical knowledge that has to be gained. But I think that [these new technologies] ... are tools. There still takes a certain level of applied creative thinking that needs to happen to approach a design situation or design problem with a computer or with the fabrication," Anderson said.
