Skift
Skift recently published a 60,000-word account of the early days and evolution of the boutique hotel industry in the United States, the “Complete Oral History of Boutique Hotels.” In compiling the story, one major defining thread among all the boutique hotel companies Skift profiled was design. Design became the signature calling card for these new hotels, the primary way for these properties to set themselves apart from the big-box, no-frills, and standard hotels of the day.

Milan is known as a place to spot design trends for the coming year, so it seems inevitable that there will be more of these escapist structures – which have popped up elsewhere this year in the Guggenheim and even in some public places, thanks to “meditation pods.” Design that enhances our health and well-being is not new, but designing spaces solely for the purpose of finding calm by disconnecting from technology does feel like a distinctly contemporary phenomenon. It’s evident in the way these projects are described, which echoes the language of self-care at large.

Data compiled by Pots, Planters & More further highlights a 23 percent increase in productivity when old or uncomfortable office furniture was replaced.

Gone are the days of soulless offices, cluttered desks, and drab interiors. Now workplaces have everything from gyms and table football to saunas and chill-out zones. Or these ones do at least, as they have been rated the 10 best in Britain. Included in the list is the headquarters of AutoTrader in Manchester, which is decorated by full-size vintage cars. The offices of TransferWise, a money-sending service based in London, includes colorful hammocks hanging down from the ceiling, table tennis tables, and a “chill-out area.”

High-end hotels and resorts are moving away from "gold, marble, and chandeliers" to instead offer guests unique experiences, say AHEAD Asia jury members, and Hoshinoya, a new 17-story hotel in Tokyo is doing just that. The hotel offers guests a modern take on the Japanese ryokan, a traditional type of rural inn. "A ryokan is traditionally a rural retreat and I think it's a very bold step to bring it into an urban environment and really embrace the spirit of the ryokan in fundamentally a high-rise building," says designer and judge André Fu.

In a clever case of digital placemaking, new Chicago hostel The Hollander leverages adventure-planning via Instagram. The inn occupies a historic furniture warehouse in the Wicker Park neighborhood, serving up photoshoot-ready interiors designed by the French studios Ciguë and Delordinaire, which custom-designed most of the furniture inside. But don’t expect a subdued and lonesome stay at the Hollander. Guests checking into the hotel’s industrial-style modern rooms are encouraged to meet over Instagram before sharing the space, and the Hollander happily promotes itself as a haven for social media types – the sort of place to see and share.

Building Design + Construction
Cue the “Superman” theme, because Clark Kent’s favorite makeshift changing room may be primed for a comeback. That’s right, the phone booth, something that has joined the ranks of record players and VCRs as items younger generations quizzically look at in old movies and television shows, is getting its second wind. These phone booths won’t be sprinkled around city streets to act as doodle pads for less ambitious graffiti artists. In fact, these phone booths aren’t meant to be outside at all but, instead, securely nestled into offices around the country.

Lab design has, to some degree, followed some of the same trends as office design. After all, issues such as ergonomics, sustainability, efficiency, and comfort are as important to scientists as they are to office assistants or executives. But for those studying things like mumps outbreaks, cancer, rotator-cuff injuries, or depression, how the lab is built can also affect research.

You shouldn’t walk on escalators. That’s right: A story in The New York Times explains that researchers have found that standing two-by-two on the escalator is actually more efficient than the stand-to-the-left, climb-to-the-right etiquette that can be seen during rush hour in metropolitan subway systems across the country.

Footwear retailer Adidas is updating its Strip store into a new design inspired by high school stadiums.
The design will be finished by June and will resemble the company's New York stores, company spokeswoman Maria Culp said. The Strip location, at Showcase mall, 3785 Las Vegas Bvld. South, near the M&M store, will have a tunnel entrance reminiscent of what high school and college athletes run through on the way to the field. It will have a test area that uses Run Genie, tablet software to help employees recommend shoes based on how a customer runs and what's in stock.

There’s a new buzz in the U.S. healthcare industry about microhospitals. Seeking a competitive edge, health systems are building these new facility types to extend their brand and target gaps in the market by brining small, full-service hospitals out into the communities where their patients live. Typical hospital procedure areas, such as imaging rooms, are located near the entrance so that one of the first tings a patient sees upon entering is the same equipment they’d see in a larger hospital.

While extensive children’s programming may be common for large resorts, it’s not necessarily the case at smaller independent hotels. But hoteliers are finding ways to incorporate unique family-friendly programming and amenities that boost engagement with kids and adults alike. For Hotel Vermont, an independent property in Burlington, Vermont, GM Hans van Wees said it’s all about creating meaningful experiences for the whole family. Two-thirds of Hotel Vermont’s guests are leisure travelers, he said, and a total of one-third of those guests have families.

Following an unprecedented spike in new hires in 2015, the pace of interior design employment returned to a more normal annual growth rate in 2016, at just under 4 percent. Although well below the nearly 12 percent jump from the year before, the addition of 2,110 new jobs ranks as the second-best year for designers since the onset of the last recession, when employers cut positions drastically. The rate of growth was similar to that of U.S. employment overall.

Last week, SpaceX successfully launched and recovered its first recycled rocket, Falcon 9. Failure is a difficult pill to swallow. People don't want to admit they have failed at anything. But failure can really be the start of something big and exciting — knowing you can restart after a disappointment. It's not the end of the world, but a true beginning. It is OK to make mistakes, and this realization can help you to grow as both as a leader and a person. Failure can get you unstuck, and help you take responsibility for your actions.
