Design hacking is seizing the chance to remake and reshuffle a configuration into something new, so that the users can creatively overcome the limitations of a system. This circumvention was something industrial designer Konstantin Grcic witnessed firsthand when he traveled to the West coast and toured a variety of tech companies and start-ups. When he saw people working on chipboard work desks, held up by concrete blocks, and doors held up by A-frame sawhorses, he realized these groups needed extremely agile, changeable products.

Hotel Designs
A Survey by E.ON of 2,000 people – both leisure and business customers – found hotel guests’ expectations have changed significantly, especially in the last five years. Travelers now take 40 percent more gadgets away with them than they did at the turn of the decade and expect convenient connections rather than the traditional features of a hotel. The use of e-readers has increased three-fold, wearable tech such as smart watches has doubled, and 2-in-5 people (44 percent) now take a tablet on holiday compared to only 1-in-20 people (6 percent) five years ago. These rapidly shifting demands have important implications for owners and designers of hotels.

Designing for wellness seems the right and proper evolution of workplace design – it aligns with our best instincts as architects to create beautiful environments to help people thrive. But just as we observed green-washing as a result of the popularity of sustainable building standards, there is already a tendency on the part of some in the design industry to slap the word "wellness" on their wares, regardless of whether or not they truly promote well-being.

Health Facilities Management
There’s lots of research that goes into detail regarding how health facility design affects the patient experience and patient healing, but those same designs have an effect on those who work in the facility as well. Houston’s Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation & Education wants to be known for its design as much as it is for its high-tech features. The center is an international resource for physicians and houses three core functions: A virtual hospital, a procedural training site, and research.

Count Tricia Esser, chief executive of the KTGY architecture firm, as a huge advocate of the modern office. Esser isn’t an advocate of open office spaces because of KTGY’s book of business – her firm primarily designs housing and shopping centers. Rather, Esser’s appreciation of these new workplace designs comes from real-life experience. The theory behind the modern, collaborative office space is that a friendlier, open space creates more opportunity for everyday worker interaction, but there’s a bottom-line reality to these alluring offices. As the economy has improved and talented workers become a scarce resource, office space has become part of the retention and recruitment game. Esser says the bump in workplace morale at KTGY was tangible from day one after the move to a new office space – not to mention favorable buzz among industry peers, clients and want-to-be employees.

Chain Store Age
Restaurant operator Johnny Rockers is celebrating its 30th anniversary year – and reaching out to millennials – by giving itself a brand refresh.
