Importing elements of classic twentieth-century French hospitality design into a hyper-casual Southern California surfing town might not sound like the most organic endeavor, but Barbara Rourke and Jason St. John of L.A.-based design firm Bells + Whistles were up for the task when creating Jeune et Jolie, a new restaurant in downtown Carlsbad, California.
“When you think of French restaurants, you think of dark red booths and brass,” Rourke says. “We tried to take those things and do them in a new way. So, instead of Bordeaux color booths, we did rosé colored booths,” along with heavy doses of natural light and a bright palette.

Interior Design
Vocon has designed offices in Los Angeles and New York with interiors from coast to coast, but as firm designer Katerina Fantozzi says, "Cleveland is home." So, when it came time to redesign its hometown headquarters to better meet the needs of the firm’s growing staff, the idea was to keep it local.
The 15,000-square-foot space is chock full of the work of local vendors, including custom furniture by Hans Noble Design and Cleveland Art. Vocon’s own executives even got in on the project, creating a café wall modeled after the refrigerator door photo gallery of founder and owner Debbie Donley and another wall filled by a leader’s Pez dispensers.

Crafted by Nike’s in-house design team, the House of Innovation 000 spans six floors of men’s and women’s apparel in addition to numerous stations for individualizing products in perpetuity. A creative mecca for sneakerheads and street fashion connoisseurs, the new retail behemoth also serves as a sleek and dynamic embodiment of the Nike design vernacular. And with its iconoclastic exterior, the store demonstrates a “huge opportunity for us at this scale to make a first impression for the cost of innovation,” says Andy Thaemert, who serves as senior creative director of global store design for Nike.

Once a flat in a 1920s tenement house, this 80-square-meter space in Warsaw has become a modern co-working office by Beza Projekt. The cozy space is outfitted with four private offices, a conference room, an eat-in kitchen, and a bathroom, complete with a polished design inspired by the TV series “Mad Men.” Warszawski UL offers a moody aesthetic that came about after the designers researched the history of the building only to discover the similarities between its original state and the 50s/60s offices of Don Draper.

Make a list of the five most likely things that could go wrong—and a few unlikely things—and cause your business big problems. If you own a pizza restaurant, it could be an infestation of rats, a rude waiter upsetting customers, or a rival pizza restaurant opening on the next block. Take the emotion out of things by imagining that you’re giving advice to a friend, then plan how you should respond to each problem. Pick the spokespeople who can communicate with customers, the media, and any investors you may have.
