Forbes
The workplace of the past is gone. We are now talking about homing from work, not working from home. The most recent Leesman Index was released in November 2015 and shredded many myths about the physical work space. It found that there is no difference on how work spaces impact gender and that age does have an impact, but it is not generational. The report also showed that natural lighting is preferred over artificial, informal areas are more effective, and other important factors. However, one-dimensionally planned spaces never work.

While traditional hospital services such as the emergency department, imaging, surgery, and medical offices are still necessary, the wellness component spans a healthcare campus to include numerous functions that focus on healthy living and community activities.

Modeling and Big Data startup Ekimetrics has unveiled a redesign of its Paris office with a very interesting solution for extra meeting room seats. Instead of tucking away chairs in a backroom, a wall was built to display them. On the wood finish wall, each stool has its own little hole. The hourglass-shaped stool comes in different colors and gives the room a sort of sculptural wall mural.

French café Le Bilboquet took its traditional bistro-vibe and to-die-for Croque Monsieur down south, with an outpost in Atlanta’s buzzing Buckhead neighborhood. Nestled in the center of the upscale shopping mecca, the freestanding bistro looks more like a sidewalk café in Saint-Germain than a restaurant in the peach state. The sun-blasted space, courtesy of a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows, features classic white-clothed tables accompanied by cozy blue velvet banquettes and coordinated wooden seating. Matching stools belly up to a traditional pewter bar set up in an inviting U-shape, with a steady arrangement of fresh flowers on view.

Although the term "design" may often be associated with artistic activity, it can be more broadly viewed as engaging in activities to translate ideas into blueprints that would improve the quality of life. First, design puts the user at the center. Although students are the end users of schools and the education system, more often than not, school buildings and curricula are designed for industrial-style, efficient education rather than student-centric education.

One of the Galleria's most popular lunch spots will be making some big changes in 2016. As part of the renovations that will see Saks Fifth Avenue relocate to a new, two-story, 210,000-square-foot store, its restaurant 51Fifteen will have a new home, too. The restaurant's interior features a palate of white, black, gray, and brass with mid-century modern pieces that will give the space "a one-of-a-kind" look. Whether that look is appealing or not may be as controversial as the company's recently shuttered steakhouse Mr. Peeples, but it certainly won't be the same old Edison bulbs and reclaimed wood that dominates much of Houston's restaurant design.

Office design has not traditionally been an issue discussed in the boardroom – indeed, a recent report by the British Council for Offices found that more than half (57 percent) of the senior executives surveyed said that property-related issues were not regularly discussed in the boardroom. However, increasingly we are seeing more C-suite senior management regarding this as a costly mistake and investing more of their time and the firm's resources in ensuring that they have the offices that best suit their workforces to ensure they maximize the business benefits.

"The big reveal," the fashion designer and high-end furrier Dennis Basso announced one afternoon last week, flinging open the doors leading to his latest redecorating project – a chapel. "Those are planters from France," Mr. Basso said in a gravelly voice that seems to know only one volume level, booming. "The carved candleholders are from Italy." And the chapel – officially the Leland Eggleston Cofer Memorial Chapel at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center on the Upper East Side of Manhattan – still had that new-carpet smell.

Sandy Hook School, where 20 children and six adults were fatally shot in 2012, will reopen in August of this year. The goal of the renovation was to create a space that harbors security and pride while also incorporating nature into the school’s design. Glass is important to create a feeling of a welcoming entry. Literal "transparency" to indicate an open and transparent educational environment. The school did not want to lose that in the concern for security – and in fact, the ability to see people approaching the school is a recognized, sound security practice.
