What makes a good workspace? Research shows that natural light is important, improving worker health and productivity. Sound levels, temperature, and ventilation need to be within comfortable ranges. Aside from the basics for physical comfort, workers do best when their workspaces balance privacy with opportunities for interaction. While most people do a lot of individual, focused work, the rise of co-working spaces is proof that we also need interaction; many freelancers find that they work better in these semi-social spaces than they do alone at home.

What makes you get up and go to work each day? According to the Question & Retain (Q&R) Happiness in the Workplace Pulse Check, 40 percent of us say the most important factor that makes us happy at work is feeling valued and supported; 19 percent of us get out of bed for the intellectual challenge work provides; and for 12 percent, the pay and benefits make that early alarm bell worthwhile. However, it’s not just about the people, the job, and the money; the data amassed by Leesman, the world’s largest independent assessor of workplace effectiveness, suggests that the physical work environment also plays a part in boosting overall employee satisfaction levels.

Throughout the conference, parks representatives returned to a core maintenance question: how do they keep a park clean, safe, and beautiful while there are people effectively living in the space?

Do you think of hotel rooms as having spacious, old-school desks, the kind that invite long hours of working? And bureaus with a half-dozen drawers? Minibars, too? Well, perhaps you haven’t stayed at a hotel lately. Millennials – even extroverted ones who have earned that generation its reputation for valuing get-out-of-your-room-and-explore experiences – may not be to blame for rooms that have started feeling more space-age than familiar. According to Michael Suomi, principal and vice president for interior design at Stonehill & Taylor, an architectural firm, the changes are aimed at keeping pace with the changing needs of all business travelers.

Start-ups, rejoice! Your office furniture can now grow at the same rate as your company. Joe Gebbia, cofounder of Airbnb, and Bernhardt Design unveiled Neighborhood, a line of modular, flexible office furniture, at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York. The entire 38-module collection is based around two "building block" designs: a high-backed seat for noise control and a low-backed one for open conversations. Inspired by Airbnb's need for office furniture that can adapt to any space, the zigzag-stitched modules can form myriad furniture configurations to accommodate differing office sizes, meeting types, and employee preferences.

IT consultant company Inteltion, a Bangkok co-working space has 60 employees who normally work at the clients’ offices to take care of the computer systems. In other words, they are present at the Inteltion office only when waiting for a new client or project. That is to say, it is not necessary to design a desk for the individual staff since they all work from their own laptops. Given how mobility plays a big role in inteltion's business, the renovation plan created a space that accommodates meetings with clients, interviews with new employees, and, above all, encourages socialization.

The first thing I noticed about the entrance to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis was the ceiling. It was low – strangely low for a hospital, I thought – though I couldn’t have told you why I’d presumed a hospital entrance should have lofty ceilings. When I asked Marlo Thomas, an actress, producer, and the closest thing that St. Jude’s has to a spiritual leader, about the ceilings, she explained they weren’t designed for me, a 6’3” adult. They were designed with kids in mind – scaled so that a three- or four-foot-tall child wouldn’t feel overwhelmed by the distance between floor and ceiling.

After Google introduced the world to its wacky slides a decade ago, a new era of interior office design was born. Many companies have since followed and started a kooky office trend, in hope of inspiring their staff and attracting the best talent – from the indoor forests of Fashion brand Misguided in Manchester, to the giant shoe house of Inventionland in the U.S. So can a kooky office really benefit your staff, or is it counterproductive?

Steve Arneson describes the “leader’s dilemma” as the quandary of how to secure the greatest output at a company without building stress to the point of diminishing returns. He recommends the transformational style of leadership, in which a manager provides support and positive feedback to their staff, building respect, commitment, and cooperation within a workforce. It’s a great idea. Unfortunately, the corporate landscape is littered with violations of this concept.

Preparing to leave for vacation is only half the process in ensuring we take a successful vacation. Taking steps to return from time off feeling refreshed and ready to take on whatever awaits is the second critical step in taking a successful vacation. With the emergency response plan approach we discussed in Part 1 of this article, we need to take a serious and unforgiving look at the meetings scheduled during the first few days of our return.
