Behind every sun-soaked, pristine architecture or design office, there's a design philosophy linking desk layout and succulent placement to employees' creativity. But as design writer Rob Alderson points out in the new book, "The Creative Workplace," creativity is difficult to explicitly define, and the creative process varies widely from person to person. So how do you design an office that will aid in the creative process for a group of individuals?

Work Design Magazine
Throughout 2016, Work Design Magazine has been gathering leading workplace experts to discuss how more choice in the workplace – deployed thoughtfully – can enable organizations to better support their current business practices and employees, as well as help to attract and retain new ones. Work Design Magazine is returning to Chicago on July 28, stacking their panels with designer-only talent, and replacing their usual moderator (Bob) with Cheryl Durst, CEO of IIDA, the International Interior Design Association. "As workplaces have evolved from offices and high cubicles to open plans that facilitate collaboration, it's become clear that there isn't one solution for optimizing employee productivity and satisfaction [at work]," said Cheryl.

Kontor
Fresh from NeoCon, Kontor caught up with Joan Blumenfeld who was struck by the amount of lounge furniture on offer from different brands there. The global interior design director at Perkins+Will, Blumenfeld has a broad view of workplace trends, and what she sees emerging now is an office full of options. Ten years ago, lounge furnishings were relegated to reception areas, says Blumenfeld. Today, they appear throughout the office.

Research conducted by the British Council for Offices (BCO) and real estate services provider Savills suggests that office workers are far from settled on the value of many workplace innovations introduced over the past decade. For the third edition of the BCO What Workers Want study, researchers set out to assess the needs of U.K. workers and how they might affect future office requirements. More than 1,100 U.K. office workers took part. The most important factors perceived to be driving employees’ sense of satisfaction with their workplace can be bracketed under getting the basics right: Comfort (87 percent), lighting (86 percent), and temperature (85 percent) were seen as the three most important factors affecting employees’ wellbeing at work.

Health Facilities Management
Furniture designers who showcased at NeoCon say they are breaking norms in the patient exam room. Many showcased new and updated products that fit in with healthcare's quest to move from volume to value and from intervention to prevention. One emerging theme is individualized places of care. Instead of stark, colorless palettes, furniture designers have reimagined spaces with warm hues that mimic those seen in a typical home. Representatives at Herman Miller say the switch to a less formal color selection can help to put patients at ease, thereby improving their perception of care.

Healthcare Design
With lighting accounting for a good portion of a healthcare project’s furniture, fixtures, and equipment costs, budget frequently drives lighting programs. At the same time, healthcare organizations realize that successful designs can pay off. For example, proper lighting can potentially improve patient satisfaction surveys – and, subsequently, reimbursements tied to those surveys – by positively influencing patients' perceptions of their environments.

In recent years, the idea of employee engagement in the workplace has reached an apex, and for good reason. When employees are invested in their job, studies have shown that they're also more ardently motivated to contribute to their employer's goals and achieve organizational success. Engaged employees are generally more enthusiastic about their work, too, and will often take initiative to further their company’s reputation through positive actions.

Google's new London office, which is now home to 800 staff from the company’s engineering team, features winding black steel and oak staircases that connect the upper floors. The communal areas house Metronap sleep pods and soft-colored furnishings by Swiss furniture company, Vitra. All food and drink in the canteens and cafes is free for staff, and they can make use of an in-office gym and a 90-meter running track, with post-workout massages also available. While building the new office, the project used a carbon consultant in order to reduce its carbon footprint, which resulted in an overall saving of 2.1 million kg of CO2 emissions.

While it may seem that Americans don't often agree on much, one issue that unites everyone is a general distaste for air travel, from constant delays and cramped seating to crumbling facilities and TSA security lines that move at a glacial pace. Across the world, newer airport facilities, such as Changi in Singapore or Schiphol in Amsterdam, look like the breezy, sleek future of air travel envisioned in midcentury travel advertising. Back in the United States, however, air travel, especially during the summer, can often feel as glamorous as being packed into a crowded subway car during rush hour, with even less personal space.

Demand is growing for healthier workplaces as increased evidence links sedentary work to poor health effects. Co-working spaces are among those leading the trend for healthier office design. Sedentary behaviors are a known risk factor for cancer, cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, and early death. The more hours we sit down, the worse the effects. The risk is so significant that some researchers believe interventions are now needed to reduce sedentary behavior. VARIDESK, a manufacturer of height-adjustable standing desks, cites research showing people are 46 percent more productive when using a standing desk. CEO Jason McCann says sit/stand desks are becoming a key concept in workplace design.

There is that familiar saying that goes "It's about the journey, not the destination." Unfortunately, this isn't always the case: Flights mean frisky security, long layovers, and unexpected delays, which can sometimes make for unpleasant travel experiences. Still, your airport journey doesn't always have to be terrible. Take Quatar's Hamad International Airport, for example. Featuring a 25-meter-long swimming pool, this $16 billion airport screams luxury.

Office buildings can so often be monstrous, impersonal towers, especially in the world’s dense urban centers. So a well-designed one, one that is sensitively-scaled and doesn’t disregard its context, tends to stand out. In São Paulo, local office FGMF Arquitetos is trying out just such an approach for size, and for a new 73,000-square-foot office tower in the Brazilian city, designers at the firm created a series of screened terraces and balconies on the facade and double-height interiors that bring light and air into workspaces.

The teachings of ancient Chinese philosopher Mo-Tzu are based on identifying truth by comparing ideas and practices to Patterns (which he called models, or standards). Those are not Confucian ritualistic standards, but practices that have been verified and tested in actual use. Mo-Tzu's "three-prong method" remains highly relevant to design today as a precursor to Living Patterns, and points to how we must use an empirical basis to shape our world (Veryard, 2015).
