The Huffington Post
For anyone who follows workplace trends, it’s no secret that health and wellness are becoming all the rage when it comes to designing for the built environment. It seems that as a society, we have turned the corner from looking at sustainability as something inherent in a building (LEED) to extending that sustainability story to HUMAN sustainability. The underlying premise is this: People ultimately are an organization’s largest expense. If we can help employees live healthier and feel better, then they will create better work products.

Work Design Magazine
Work Design Magazine brought their general "choice in the workplace" TALK theme back to D.C. recently, but this time, they gave it a twist: They didn't just talk about choice. Instead, they stacked the panel with designers only, and talked about designing for it. Cheryl Durst, the executive vice president and CEO of IIDA, the International Interior Design Association, joined Work Design Magazine as guest moderator, and CallisonRTKL hosted the event in their big, bright office, where early-arriving attendees got to tour the new Arcadis space upstairs.

At Cards Against Humanity's 12,000-square-foot Chicago headquarters, the founders of the self-proclaimed "party game for horrible people" are equipped to do it all. "In a single day, I can go from recording a podcast to cooking lunch to pulling screenprints in the studio," says Cards co-founder Max Temkin, who shares the space not only with his own team, but with dozens of other independent artists, designers, comedians, journalists, and musicians who sub-lease desks there. The open-plan, co-working office concept stems from the idea that cross-pollination breeds creativity, and as such, they've outfitted their space to foster as wide a range of creative endeavors as possible.

Health Facilities Management
Preventing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) is a top concern of all healthcare organizations. Beyond their traditional role in cleaning and disinfection, environmental services (ES) professionals are playing an ever-larger role in determining which surfaces are selected for healthcare interiors. This not only ensures that these finishes won't degrade under rigorous cleaning regimens, but they also will be easier to disinfect in the first place.

"One of the first things we did when we moved into the office was issue everyone with toy Nerf guns," Paul Harris gleefully admits. The co-founder of BrightHR explains that he wanted the Manchester, England office to be an environment where if people were feeling overwhelmed, pressured, or tired they could easily step away from the desk and have fun or simply relax. So as well as space hoppers, scooters, games consoles, and a ping pong table, there are football nets for impromptu penalty shoot outs and a 60-foot lawn in the middle of the oval-shaped office with bean bags and tents for staff to crash in.

There’s a downtown vibe to the newest 21c Museum Hotel. Contemporary artworks fill the public gallery spaces in a former factory building. The restaurant features an open kitchen, white subway tiles, and stout concrete pillars. Guest rooms above look like lofts with platform beds and floor-to-ceiling drapes to draw across expansive steel-framed windows. A trendy boutique hotel in New York or Los Angeles, perhaps? Try Oklahoma City, where the rates start at the comparatively modest $219 a night.

Designed in the early Art Deco style, the Central Library’s "monumental simplicity serves as a backdrop for an ambitious program of decorative sculpture," such as those that adorn the Flower Street entrance. As the pyramid atop the library suggests, the design includes hints of Egyptian influence, as well as "Egyptian, Roman, Byzantine, and various Islamic civilizations," and revival styles like Spanish Colonial, says the Los Angeles Conservancy. Its interior is also richly decorated, featuring murals, elaborated paintings, and an incredible hanging ironwork piece in its gorgeous rotunda.

The stunning restaurant on Lafayette Street in SoHo, New York City, "is truly representative of the food – elegant, simple, larger than life," notes chef Daniel Rose. It’s also surprisingly complex and curious, with layers of design choices that leave the rooms looking both raw and lavishly styled. In order to best match the simplified elements of Rose's cuisine, remnants of the building's past lives were all removed. The majority of the brick walls are actually reinterpretations inspired by one lone raw wall on Lafayette Street that managed to survive.

The new 560,000-square-foot expansion to Lego’s headquarters in Billund, Denmark, will include long-term stay facilities for traveling employees and a massive, multitiered atrium that will relieve cramped quarters for the company’s 4,000 local employees. "There's no slide. Fair enough," says Claus Flyger Pejstrup, SVP for Lego Business Services, with a laugh, alluding to the two-story steel tube in Lego's existing headquarters. Instead, the space is modeled to engender playful productivity and encourage collaboration face-to-face, away from desks.

Cubicles are so 20th century. A growing number of people can now work remotely, and want the flexibility to do that wherever they want. That's the motivation behind the Greenpod, a futuristic office design concept with walls that can project different surroundings. The idea comes from Neste, an oil refining corporation that produces a renewable diesel fuel from raw materials. The Greenpod is part of Neste's "Pre-order the Future" initiative, which envisions five innovative products made from sustainable materials, Neste's head of communications, Osmo Kammonen, tells Tech Insider.

A new store named The Clearport has recently opened in Jersey City, New Jersey. Designed by owner Haytham Elgawly, this airport-themed space brings consumers a new shopping experience, albeit more positive than its inspiration. Check-out lines are a nod at airport security, meanwhile clothing is divided by terminals. In an innovative twist, shoppers are able to see arrivals and departures screens featuring new items and those recently sold as soon as they walk in. The typical grey security bins are also placed around the store, only here it's for costumers' convenience. They can fill them with any extra items they carry as they browse through the racks.

It’s wisdom practically as old as the hills: Always treat your employees as well as you want them to treat your best customers. And when it comes to ROI, employee engagement is an integral part of driving and maximizing your revenue.
It’s difficult, if not impossible, for an organization to achieve success without the backing of a dedicated team of employees. Employee engagement is particularly relevant for companies with a large group of frontline staff. Your customers are, after all, human, and people connect with people, not businesses.
