For its first Brooklyn cafe, Stumptown had its eye on an 1863 firehouse in Cobble Hill. But the lease wasn’t signed when the Portland-based coffee roaster began talking with local firm Jessica Helgerson Interior Design (JHID) about designing the Brooklyn outpost. “We were kind of working in a highly conceptual way,” recalls Mira Eng-Goetz, one of the lead designers on the project. “It could have been in any building, but we knew the approach needed to respect the existing architecture wherever they put the cafe and take cues from the neighborhood that the building was in.”

Interiors + Sources
Fashion and interior design share many commonalities, but perhaps the most interesting is the fact that they both can be trendy, timeless, and cyclical. Some readers of a certain age may object to my labeling them as "older." I get that. "Old" and "older" are pejoratively loaded terms in our society and in a profession that thrives on creativity, innovation, and novelty. If you want to stay competitive or employable, you need to reinforce your value to your clients or your firm.
