Building Design + Construction
Noma, a restaurant that has been named the best in the world four times by World’s 50 Best Restaurants, has moved from the 16th century harborside warehouse it has called home for the past 14 years. It’s new abode was built on the site of a protected ex-military warehouse once used to store mines for the Royal Dutch Navy.
Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group as an intimate garden village, the new location dissolves the restaurant’s individual functions into a collection of separate but connected buildings. There are 11 spaces in total, each one tailored to its specific needs, and densely clustered around the kitchen.

Open offices are here to stay, regardless of the science that decries them. Like it or not, they’re the most cost-efficient way to cram as many employees into a space as possible. The interior design studio Casework attempted an anti-open office for the design and technology agency Work & Co in Portland, Oregon. The firm’s design features smart acoustics to keep things quiet, a communal cafe-like kitchen and library, and a total lack of typical office gimmicks that might keep people around after-hours. The result? While the office’s layout is still an open plan, the ethos is decidedly anti-open office.

Chain Store Age
Starbucks is extending its commitment to sustainability with an ambitious initiative expected to reduce utilities expenses by $50 million during the next 10 years. The coffee giant’s new "Greener Stores" framework is designed to set a new standard for designing, building, and operating Starbucks stores. Over the next year, Starbucks will develop an accredited program to audit all existing company-operated stores in the U.S. and Canada against the framework criteria, which will result in the chain operating 10,000 "Greener Stores" globally by 2025.

Like the cherry on top of a decadent ice cream sundae, Bill Bensley’s eccentric design of Pink Pearl—the resort’s experiential restaurant that opens in October—is the pièce de résistance in the resort’s fabled backstory as the former French colonial Lamarck University. Bensley’s zany interiors set the stage for the gastronomic soirees Madame Pearl hosted at this beachfront art deco mansion, with bubblegum-pink splashes, flamboyant prints, extravagant gilt-framed portraits, and a sparkling chandelier.

AllesWirdGut Architektur recently completed a District Administration office in the German city of Erlangen. The ground-floor space was designed to be as public and as accessible as possible and features a cafeteria with both indoor and outdoor seating.
A generously open staircase leads to the upper floors, where offices are designed for different purposes. The smooth glass facade is complemented by aluminum fins that protect from sunlight and lend the facade both movement and depth.

You've promised your customers a new product and your team is rushing to get it out on time. You've got smart people trying to coordinate complicated tasks; it's arduous and expensive, and your company's reputation rests on the project's successful completion.
Needless to say, it's time to kick things into high gear. Simultaneously, you know that disrupting the culture you've worked so hard to maintain would be disastrous.
