Bloomberg BNA
For a reminder of how fast design trends can change, look no further than the July 1990 edition of the ABA Journal. Several pages are dedicated to honoring the winners of the journal's then-annual law office design competition. Twenty-five years later, almost everything has changed. Instead of a dark warren of mahogany tables and wall sconces, lawyers want an open suite of rooms washed in daylight. But one thing has survived: the expansive lobby or reception area.
In an era when law firms are cutting costs on all fronts — by reducing staffing ratios, de-equitizing partners, using alternative fee arrangement, and reduced rates — how and why have law firms held onto the expansive lobby in some of the most expensive real estate zones in the country?

Google, Vine, Bitly, Birchbox, WeWork, and Spotify may be very different companies, but they’re among the dozens of major brands paying as much as $100K each for a tiny, 10-person startup called The Sill to equip their NYC spaces with office plants. And we don't mean a few simple potted plants on shelves and desks — we're talking hanging flowers, greens planted into furniture, and entire plant walls.

The interior designers at 28 Form have completed a café in Wroclaw, Poland, designed specifically with parents and children in mind. The first floor of the café includes a contained play space for babies that has little windows for the children to see out of. A variety of lampshade shapes add to the playfulness of the space.

Millennials number over 80 million, making them the largest generation ever. These up-and-comers now outnumber baby boomers and Gen Xers in the workforce and represent the "worker bees" most likely to be tasked with extensive business travel. Moreover, research by Barkley, Boston Consulting Group, and SMG showed that over 70 percent of millennials aspire to visit all 50 states, travel abroad as much as possible, and visit all seven continents in their lifetime. The influence these traveling millennials bring with them is immense, and it has impacted the realm of hotel design.

After being headquartered in sleepy North Andover, Massachusetts, for a decade, Converse was ready to hustle to more cosmopolitan environs. A Boston building from 1908, the same year the sneaker company was founded, was a slam dunk. The location is Lovejoy Wharf, a $230 million redevelopment, and Jennifer Carpenter Architect was hired to gut and fully redesign the structure, expanding it from eight stories to 10 for a total of 214,000 square feet. That's enough space to give 600-plus employees not only office areas, a materials library, and showrooms, but also perks such as a yoga studio.

"Our students understand and have access to a growing body of evidence on which to base their design decisions and actions."

The growing importance of transparency in the manufacturing process for windows was a big focus of the second day of the recent American Architectural Manufacturers Association fall conference.
Aaron Smith, the director of sustainable building solutions with ASSA ABLOY, gave a presentation titled "Opening the Door to Transparency — LEED v4, EPDs, and HPDs." Smith said transparency is a major focus of green building codes and standards — and that represents a big change from the past.

Are design technologists most valuable doing project work, or when given some space to research and develop? And how much of what they do should be "support" versus "production"? DTS Management Group wanted to address this seemingly universal challenge in a creative way. We came up with the idea of polarizing the issue, and presenting the benefits of each side in an op-ed style article. Realizing that everyone’s solution will most likely lie somewhere between the two poles, we hope that each perspective can offer some food for thought when finding the right mix for your firm.
