Childlike in spirit but architectural in scale, oversize kaleidoscopes wait along the hiking path at Sacromonte Crafted Wines and Landscape Hotel. The kaleidoscopes, fitted inside with mirrors, fracture views of the landscape into faceted pinwheels of brilliant earth tones. In terms of agricultural function, these prismatic devices are pure whimsy. At peak production, several years from now, the granitic soil on this estate in rural Uruguay, straight inland from trendy Punta del Este, will yield 40,000 bottles of wine.

Architectural Record
The Calgary New Central Library is clad in 465 hexagonal panels of glass and metal. Their shape helps “negotiate” the radius of the facade without obvious faceting, explains Dialog principal Rob Adamson. Patrons enter through an elongated, arched opening carved out of this skin that defines a public exterior passageway extending from one side of the building to the other. Overhead, cedar planks reinforce the shape of the arch, which the architects say was inspired by the Chinook winds—a cloud formation that occurs in the region under certain weather conditions.

Metropolis
Alexander Fehre, a Stuttgart, Germany-based interior architect, has earned a reputation among his commercial clients for pairing modern, adamantine material palettes with navigable open-plan layouts. The client requested an aesthetically striking workplace, and the nearly 35,000-square-foot space is just that: Its eclectic combination of materials, surfaces, and colors delivers a surreal, postmodern feel. Housed in a sprawling former production hall, it articulates zones through design elements like vibrantly painted furniture, ample applications of zinc and raw wood, and full-size trees that seem to hover in the corporate ether.

Effective communication is key to earning influence as a leader; and to be an effective communicator, you must be clear, concise, and consistent. Priorities and goals must not be repeated continually but instead lived through a leader's actions and decisions. This requires intentional listening skills. Leaders must tune into what their employees are saying, both verbally and nonverbally. They must avoid distraction and listen with the intent to hear the entire message.

Curiosity and concern are paramount leadership traits. The best way for CEOs to learn both about and from their increasingly large and complex organizations is to ask questions. It also demonstrates respect for employees' ideas, feelings, and opinions. In other words, great leaders care and act on what others think.
