A new IIDA survey found a correlation between office design and the bottom line. The survey revealed that more than half of its participants are in managerial or professional-level positions who spend most of their working time in an office leased or owned by their employer. Respondents to the survey exhibited attitudes that suggest there is a strong correlation between good office design and retention. "There is absolutely a correlation," says Cheryl Durst, executive vice president and CEO of IIDA. Both anecdotal information and this "statistically rigorous study" point to the connection between well-designed workplaces, employee engagement, and productivity. So what should companies focus on if they want to use workplace design as a retention tool? Here are five places to start.

Primo Orpilla, the co-founder of the architecture and design firm Studio O+A, has been designing offices for digital-technology companies for more than thirty years – basically since the start of the PC era. Orpilla sat down with The New Yorker to share his theory of tech-office design. That theory, in short, is this: The more digital the company, the more analog the space should feel.

The workstation is the signature product of the startup Altwork, which has spent the past six years developing an ergonomic solution that is completely customizable, converting from a standing desk to a more traditional sitting desk to a reclined position. The chair was inspired by the company's cofounder, John Speicher, who had been injured in a car accident and could only work comfortably while reclining. After research and testing, Speicher and cofounder and CEO Che Voigt came up with a medical-looking workstation. But it's not meant exclusively for people who are injured or disabled – Voigt imagines the Altwork station for anyone whose main professional tool is the computer.

What happens when you gather more than 100 interior designers, lobbyists, and a marijuana advocate for three days in Denver? You get an inspiring and successful second annual IIDA Advocacy Symposium. Interior design advocates from around the country descended upon Denver Sept. 23-26 for an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the legislative landscape and gain access to resources designed to bolster advocacy efforts. “The IIDA Advocacy Symposium not only trains advocates on how to talk about the profession of interior design and the complexities of government, it also brings together design advocates from around the country to meet and learn from one another,” said Emily Kluczynski, MPPA, director of Advocacy, Public Policy and Legislative Affairs at IIDA.

Offices full of people create noise. Conversations, ringing phones, and keyboard clicks are a constant. As designers plan for new workplaces and for modifications to existing workplaces, there are a few simple acoustical concepts that can help ensure a better outcome for the employee’s satisfaction and the success of the enterprise. Adding acoustically absorptive materials improves noise levels. Absorptive materials take many forms. Acoustical ceilings, acoustical wall panels, and carpet are a few we all know.

A black box with pegboards for walls forms the centerpiece of financial services firm Ansarada's renovated Chicago office, which includes a batting cage for baseball breaks. The original structure was not heritage listed, which gave the studio flexibility to create an assortment of unusual features. A key component of this fit-out is the insertion of a central plywood box that defines public and private areas of the office. Enclosed within this volume are utility spaces, as well as a private reading room and conference space.

While many art museums have pursued big-budget expansions in their bids for larger and more loyal audiences, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago is rethinking and reconfiguring its public spaces without altering its basic footprint downtown. “Bigger is not always better,” said Madeleine Grynsztejn, the museum’s director. She described the purpose of the redesign as “finding new ways to bring art, learning, and food together, reflecting how people like to experience culture today.”

In February, the Danish architecture firm BIG announced plans to construct a building in the Bronx. The glass, steel, and concrete-clad structure will contain meeting rooms for community groups and educational programs. An exercise courtyard will offer a climbing wall, and green roofs are planned to cap the structure. It also happens to be the new home of the NYPD's 40th Precinct. With ambitions to be more like a community center than a bunker, it's not the design you'd expect from a police station.

The recently completed five-story patient tower and renovations at Mercy Health-Anderson Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio, were designed to put patients first with input from them and children from a nearby school. The $74 million expansion adds 111 private patient rooms, including three new 30-bed units devoted to medical, surgical, and orthopedic patients, and a new 21-bed unit for cardiovascular patients. Patient rooms have sliding glass doors that go from opaque to transparent with the flick of a wall switch. The switch glass technology eliminates the need for privacy curtains and provides another infection control safeguard.

Those working in the healthcare sector of design and construction have likely encountered issues to do with the growing demographic and specialty of medicine referred to as bariatrics, a branch of medicine that deals with the study and treatment of obesity. While many organizations have been proactive in the healthcare sector with creating facilities that will allow larger individuals access, limited information and guidance has been available, and these organizations have largely relied on their experience with this type of patient and the collective knowledge they have accumulated in responding to this patient group.

When was the last time you went to your doctor or your lawyer or your dentist and negotiated the fee? Never, right? You don’t do that, because these professions have established precedents for how and what they charge, and people’s expectations match that. In contrast, the services interior designers, and to some extent architects, provide are often seen by the public as luxuries. So designers can have a difficult time convincing clients of the value of our talent and skill, and that makes it very difficult to advocate for our established fees and pricing structure.
