Taking a page from specialty chains like Sephora and Ulta, these concept stores reimagine beauty to encourage shopper discovery, playing host to popup shops and fresh “breakthrough” experiences, like a Test-And-Play hygiene bar.
In recent years, the drugstore chain has worked to elevate the beauty departments across its store fleet, adding more niche, organic brands, and trend-driven displays. Maly Bernstein, vice president of beauty and personal care for CVS Health, spoke with PSFK on how the BeautyIRL stores mark a dramatic evolution of that push, with the goal of expanding the concept to more stores next year and beyond.

Interior Design
There's a place for outsize design gestures. But for Cortina, a restaurant in Seattle, Heliotrope Architects wanted to keep the design understated and elegant. "No gimmicks," principal Mike Mora explains. "We set out to design a light-filled, meticulously detailed, and well-crafted restaurant." A carefully reconfigured layout positions custom tables near a long run of windows. A 64-foot-long bar in white oak and granite provides a space for happy hour. Although custom white-oak woodwork defines the space, a red oak ceiling provides warmth. Walls, meanwhile, are white-painted panels more often found in residential spaces, to help diners feel right at home.
