A Message From 2019 ISAE President, Rob French
Years ago, one of my duties as a Cook-Witter intern included tracking legislation for a handful of association clients. I didn’t know much about the association world, but through these various clients I was exposed quickly. I was later fortunate enough to be hired by an association that highly valued its staff professional development (Illinois Chiropractic Society) and my ISAE membership automatically paid and attendance at educational events expected. Through the ISAE, I not only learned skills for my own position, but also about my office colleagues. I gained a greater understanding of how my role fit with the rest of our staff, and through that how we could be a stronger team.
Today, I find myself sitting in the Executive Director chair for one of those same clients (Illinois Economic Development Association) from my internship while assuming the Presidency of yet another (ISAE). I owe a great deal to my mentors (CW, ICS) and to the ISAE for the education and opportunities given to me. It is an honor and privilege to serve as president of this organization, and I hope I can give back to this group which has given me so much.
Last year our President, Eric Klinner, set the stage by having us re-evaluate who we are and what we do. It is an important question that all of us in the association world have to ask. Beyond that, we actively shifted how we thought about ownership and unity: this wasn’t the President’s agenda, it was the IEDA’s agenda – it was “ours.” Task forces were assembled with a diverse makeup and narrow focus. Long time members and fresh faces got together and took a fresh look at our educational offerings on one day, while another group streamlined our legislative focus another.
Many committees found themselves with new co-chairs, with new ideas, which gave us brand new programming. One specific example is a presentation we have scheduled for you on February 22, The Advocacy Playbook (For the Rest of the Staff). We will cover what advocacy means to you, how to best communicate advocacy to membership, and what does that lobbyist do all day?
Like any organization the ISAE belongs to its members, and we are blessed with a uniquely skilled membership that can really make an organization soar. Whether it’s a successful program that’s been launched or template that has been made, we invite you to get involved and share your ideas. I look forward to seeing what we build in 2019!

When we asked association staff what are the most significant data challenges that they face, 48 percent of respondents told us that “Inadequate membership dashboard and reporting tools” represented a top problem. Yet, perhaps there is no more important step that you can take to improve your membership program.

Association executives often ask, "How frequently should the board meet?" The best answer is, "When there is a reason to convene for the purpose of governance." The majority of boards meet quarterly. It is ironic that some of America’s largest associations get the job done by convening only three times a year. Inversely, smaller associations and chambers find a need to meet monthly or bimonthly. Why do organizations with small budgets, fewer members or less programs need to meet more frequently?

Many associations struggle with the right strategy for involving students in their organization and events. Some attract students to join and participate in the organization’s programs and services while still in college. They offer significant membership and registration discounts as well as ample presentation opportunities. They usually have a “get them while they’re young” and “let’s put the kids in the show” mindset. They invest in these young professionals with the hope that doing so will keep their industry’s employment funnel healthy. So, is this the right strategy?

Meetings are made for extroverts. They’ll talk to anyone about anything. They’re gregarious, and they get their energy from interacting with other people. But extroverts only make up about half your attendees, says Sharon Fisher, president of experiential communications company Play with a Purpose. The other half, she says, are the introverts whose personal style is almost the opposite, and those attendees need to be considered in your meeting design.

The days where organizations can solely rely on a few large, lengthy (and often expensive) in-person training events as their professional development program are rapidly disappearing. According to the Center for Association Leadership, associations would be best served by focusing on learning that is specific, competency-based, and interactive. Technology allows for a wide range of possibilities in these focus areas and can offer education paths that are tailored to the learners’ individual needs.
