What’s New at ISAE?
Register your team for ISAE’s new ramp up workshop on Advocacy!
Advocacy is more than lobbying or the lobbyist. It’s also more than the issue du jour. Advocacy is a form of education which has the best success when it’s an association-wide commitment.
This ISAE Ramp Up workshop is designed for all department managers to attend and learn together. Our facilitators will illustrate how a teamwork approach to advocacy can impact membership and public support.
Following this session, participants should be able to:
- Describe the role of association advocacy and of lobbyists.
- Easily promote and maintain interdepartmental support.
- List ten best practices for effective advocacy communications.

“I am excited that several staff members from our association are attending this event in an effort to help us break the silos we tend to work in!”– Eric Klinner, CAE

Higher Logic
If your membership organization were a car, engagement would be the gasoline. For organizations like associations and user groups, member engagement fuels your core objectives. Since every organization is different, there isn't a magical "one size fits all" method to increase and maintain member engagement. Instead, we’ve compiled the best components of the successful strategies we’ve seen at numerous companies and membership organizations.

I bet you’ve heard this before: “An object at rest, tends to stay at rest.” Oh, yeah, it’s Newton’s first law of motion: any object will stay at rest or in motion unless acted on by an external force. It’s also referred to as the law of inertia. Yes, an object at rest, tends to stay at rest. However, a conference at rest, tends to die.

When your typical sources of non-dues revenue aren’t seeming to drive the same amount of money to your association, it isn’t cause for your association to give up on them completely. Yes, introducing new streams of non-dues revenue is always great, but there are ways to refresh and revive your current sources as well.

The consent agenda is a tool to facilitate more effective board meetings. Adding technology to the concept improves ease of use and impact. In today’s fast-paced world, we must respect volunteers’ contributions of time and talents. It will be difficult to convene a quorum if directors feel the meeting wastes their time. It is especially problematic when so much of a meeting is used for reporting: listening, reading, discussing and approving. One wonders how the board gets to the essential business of mission and goals if reports consume most the time. A consent agenda may be the solution, technology may be the mechanism.

Sometimes, figuring out if your association messages are getting through to your members feels like playing “Duck, Duck, Goose.” You hold your breath in anticipation, hoping they’ll land on “goose” and choose your message as the one of the lucky ones they’ll read that day.
