Management Transition Update
It has been a little over a month since The Firm handed off management of the Illinois Society of Association Executives (ISAE) to Pivot Management Professionals (Pivot). Pivot is working diligently with the Board to prioritize projects. Pivot has developed a 100 Day Plan, which it has fully implemented.
Between the 100 Day Plan and the Board of Directors prioritization, ISAE staff is working to:
- Complete membership database transition so that members can pay online via credit card. At this time, you can renew by requesting an invoice by emailing Aaron@isae.com. He will send you an invoice, which you can return with a check to:
ISAE
POB 588

- Develop committee and task force charges and assignments.
- Finalize details for March 2020 membership event.
- Plan out membership activities for 2020 through at least 1st quarter 2021.
Periodic updates like this will be par for the course going forward. It is just one approach of ISAE’s communication plan. It is vital that our mission and message is shared with members, non-members, industry partners, and the public.
Just as important, if not more, to communication is listening. The ISAE Board of Directors and staff wants to hear from you informally (via email, phone, or in person) or formally (through topic/subject targeted surveys). It bears repeating – this is YOUR association.
Marketing, Public Relations and Communications is Domain 9 for the ASAE’s Certified Association Exam (CAE). Becoming a CAE should be a goal for any association executive; no matter what level. A renewed emphasis will be placed on assisting members to reach this milestone, as well as, helping those members who are renewing their CAE certification.
To close, Pivot has taken the baton and is strategically positioning itself to cross that finish line in first place. One of the linchpins for ISAE is to become not only the “go-to resource” but the “model” for association managers, executives, staff, and boards. This picture summarizes the approach taken.

CAE News
Congratulations to Alicia Davis-Wade for passing the December CAE exam!
Also, ISAE Executive Director, Sarah Decatoire, CAE, IOM, received an update from ASAE regarding the May 2020 exam.
- The CAE Program will be moving to a computer-based administration for the May 2020 CAE exam. We will be using sites through our testing vendor, so we will not need sites set up by the SAEs and we will not need volunteer proctors.
- The May 2020 exam will be under the current exam content outline. A new outline will be first used with the December 2020 exam. We will have the December exam content outline to you by the end of February.
Look to the ISAE website for updates and links regarding the CAE exam.

Call for Volunteers
ISAE needs member volunteers to help the association grow. Please e-mail Aaron McEvoy at aaron@isae.com to discuss the opportunities available.

Few people come right out and say it, but the desire to belong and feel like you’re a part of a community is a basic human need and longing. The sad thing is, Cigna's 2020 Loneliness Index revealed that three in five Americans consider themselves lonely. They don’t experience a sense of belonging and community. "All the lonely people, where do they all belong?” One place comes to mind: your association.

I would ban the yearly planning meeting, preferring a three-year approach to strategic planning. Strategic planning is the process for defining direction, setting priorities and aligning resources. It serves as a guide for successive boards, committees and the staff. It is developed at a multi-year leadership retreat. Some organizations convene a yearly planning meeting where directors are asked to set 12 months of priorities. This is quite different than a periodic leadership retreat, though the two concepts are sometimes confused.

Associations Now
Leaders often say one of their biggest challenges is keeping an organization on course as everything around it (particularly technology) is constantly changing. But sometimes the problem is compounded when leaders hold on too long to ways of acting and thinking that no longer work well — and not just because of technology. A new report from the MIT Sloan Management Review says that leaders tend to hold on to outdated leadership tactics and mindsets for too long, putting their organizations’ future success at risk.

Associations Success
At the beginning of every year, Jessica Johnson meets with the board of directors for The Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) to determine goals and projects in the coming months. It’s exciting, and everyone comes to the table with new ideas to move SHEA forward. The trouble is, with just Johnson and one other staffer, there’s only so much bandwidth to actually tackle these ideas. And that’s where the parking lot comes in.

“You need to deliver knowledge that you aren’t yet aware of, for jobs that don’t yet exist, to a group of people who don’t know that they will need it. And you need to do it yesterday!” What do you think of this quote from futurist Jim Carroll? It’s ambitious, but it would make an excellent mission statement for professional development at your association.
