Join the American Associations Day Host Committee in D.C.
As leaders of state associations from across the country and members of the American Associations Day Host Committee, we have come together with the common goal of advocating for our community. We are asking you to join us in DC March 9-10 to share with Congress the Power of A Message: associations impact our future, fuel the economy, enrich lives and keep us competitive.
Join us at American Associations Day to learn about the issues, meet association professionals from your state and around the country, and attend the ASAE Board Reception. With the issue of federal employee attendance at meetings still under fire, the new overtime rule posing a threat to many associations, and the potential 40 percent excise tax on healthcare plans- there are no shortage of issues. Click here for more details.

Smooth the Path
Will members get enough value from our association in the future? Yes, membership may have held steady last year. Yes, retention metrics may also be stable. But that doesn’t mean we are free from worry. Always looming is the big question, are we doing the right things now that will give members value and keep membership growing in the future?
While working at a large association you have likely learned to live with silos, smokestacks, or stovepipes. No matter what you call them you know their organizational impact is the same: inefficiency, dysfunction, hard feelings, and low moral.
By Robert C. Harris
"The past president destroyed my potential for a successful term," said the board's chief elected officer. "My past president was argumentative, unreliable and promoted a personal agenda." About 80 percent of nonprofit organizations keep their immediate past president on the board for another year. A good past president knows how to transition from the chief leader to serving as a director on the board. Good past presidents give plenty of space to the new president.
In the end, keeping your members coming back to your community comes down to more than just making participation into a game, or training your members to login every day. Without engaging content, none of that really matters.
Virtual events can be a welcome, practical addition to your association’s event lineup. Virtual events offer convenience and flexibility for speakers and attendees. They often cost less to produce than live events and the savings from which can be passed on to members, making it easier to be engaged with your association. Although there are some perceived barriers to hosting a virtual event, today’s technology largely provides a quality experience even for the most basic computer setup.

The Demand Networks
Adopting non-financial/quantitative measures requires a culture change as well as a different way of doing business. It starts, however, with acknowledging and detecting new sources of value, identifying drivers of success and conducting new types of research that validates assumptions and identifies relationships between cause and effect.
