Witter named 2014 Leading Association Lobbyist
Randall F. Witter was selected as one of five 2014 Leading Association Lobbyists by Association TRENDS. Witter is President of Cook-Witter, Inc., and a Certified Association Executive. Association TRENDS recognized Witter for his work on the Illinois Lobbyist Registration Act as the representative for ISAE and Association Forum of Chicagoland. He spearheaded efforts to amend lobbyist registration fees, which impacted all individuals and organizations that lobby in Illinois. Witter also coordinated lobby efforts to reform the Illinois Not-for-Profit Act to ensure state statutes allow associations to use the latest forms of electronic communication when conducting associations business. A message from the 2015 American Associations Day Host Committee
As leaders of state associations from across the country, ASAE volunteers, and members of the American Associations Day Host Committee, we have come together with the common goal of advocating for our community. We are asking you to join us in DC March 18-19 to share with Congress the Power of A message: associations impact our future, fuel the economy, enrich lives and keep us competitive. You don’t have to be a government relations specialist to make a difference. Join us at American Associations Day to ensure that our members of Congress know what associations do to improve our districts and communities.

In case you missed it or need it for reference, here's a full transcript of Governor Rauner’s State of the State Address, as delivered on Feb. 4.

Why your association needs member personas
According to HubSpot, a persona is a semi-fictional representation of your ideal customer based on market research and real data about your existing customers. Now I know what you’re thinking: I’m not in marketing and my association doesn’t really have customers, so why should I care? Well, no matter what industry you’re in, personas are the key to success. And in the case of associations, we’re talking about member personas. Creating personas for your members can actually help you to recruit and retain the right people. After all, if you know what your personas are trying to achieve, you can create content to help them reach their goals.

Do our association's members feel taken care of?
    Smooth the Path
The question to ask ourselves: is our association pro-member or pro-association? That orientation makes all the difference in the world to our members. Associations that are pro-members will thrive. Associations that are pro-association will continue to struggle.

Are you the 'up periscope' for your nonprofit organization?
    By William D. Pawlucy
The nonprofit world is seeing a downturn in volunteerism, a squeeze on its revenue streams and rising competition. How can you be the one who sees what is ahead and makes important course changes to maintain your organization's relevance? During a recent board training session, an executive director was asked about his role. His response led me to write this article. He said, "I need to be the 'up periscope' for my organization. That is my most critical role." Here are five ways to be proactive rather than reactive and be the "up periscope" for your organization.

What tacit value do you offer?
It generally takes a lot of very focused, intense work to arrive at the sources of your tacit value, and the “why” that animates the entire being of your organization. The truth is, a lot of learning leaders don’t want to face up to this type of work. It’s easier to look for “best practices,” to follow what the competition is doing, to license the latest technology or to dabble in the latest learning trend. In most cases, that’s not creating value.

Employing good talent is a war?
    by Larry Timm
“Talent wars” is a phrase I first heard during the dotcom era. Frankly, the phrase seemed overly dramatic. Growth was rampant, and there was high demand for those with the dotcom skillset. Yes, there were corporate winners and losers, but even the casualties of business were largely due to failed business plans, lack of capital, or a variety of other factors that excluded a sole lack of talent. In 2013, I began hearing the phrase again, and nowadays with increasing regularity. This time, the shoe is fitting.
