Member data collection: The never-ending story
Associations Now
Association professionals, like most marketers, lead double lives. By day we strive to collect data about our members, to verify their addresses and job titles, and to learn their interests — anything that makes it easier to serve them and sell to them more effectively. By night, in our personal lives, we jealously protect that very same data about ourselves from the prying eyes of other marketers and advertisers. And so we know from personal experience that the work in our day job is an uphill battle.
Can associations keep pace in the tech race?
Association Adviser
Associations are generally not early adopters of technology, but they are taking steps to close the knowledge gap. According to Fara Francis, chief information officer of The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), association leadership now welcomes IT to sit at the table to participate in identifying the organization’s business strategy and goals.
Why do we waste time at board meetings?
By William D. Pawlucy
How many times do we say that we want our board of directors meetings to run more efficiently? Poorly run board meetings are the number one reason why there is a lack of focus around strategic issues. As organizations seek performance excellence, they look to organizations for performance improvements such as the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and performance techniques and tools such as Six Sigma. Both Baldrige and Six Sigma recommend performance scorecards and dashboards to track, measure and monitor performance looking forward. Here are some key metrics to track for your organization.

Don't market your association on this alone
MemberClicks
Marketing is an essential part of an association professional’s job. From content marketing (providing your members and prospects with content that educates, entertains, and/or entices) to referral marketing (and building membership ambassadors who help you reach out to prospects), small-staff associations are busy coordinating it all. However, if you have been busy telling people about (only) the networking opportunities at your association you’ve hit a time warp because it’s not a message that will appeal to today’s audience.
4 deeds your conference must exploit
Midcourse Corrections
Your conference should be something to be experienced. It should be an action verb, not a passive experience. It should be something that participants do, not consume. The following four deeds are how to create an active unforgettable transformative conference experience for your participants. You need these deeds to grow your conference. They are the fundamental nature of an amazing conference attendee experience.
'I'm as engaged as I want to be'
Effective Database Management
When associations measure member engagement, they discover that some portion of the membership is not engaged at all, and the natural tendency is to say "We need to do something to get these members engaged!" But it may be a mistake to spend too much time and energy on it. And here's why: Some members won't engage, but they will always renew.
Are your metrics for success and criteria for rewards consistent with your vision?
The Demand Perspective
Is there any organization in the world — business or non-profit — that would readily admit customers are not its number one priority? “We just don’t care that much about our customers. We are busy with more important things, such as budget and board meetings.” Let's face it, we are surrounded by well-intentioned, self-proclaimed member or customer-centric organizations that, nonetheless, behave more like product and process-centered bureaucracies.
