Staying true to the characterization of their generation, millennials do a nice job of dominating the conversation. Baby boomers have also had their time in the light, and Gen Z is slowly making its way into the news feeds. What many people miss, however, is serving the crew that falls smack in the middle of it all. While so much time has been focused on how to get the newest recruits on board, Gen Xers have been a part of your base for quite some time — or have they?

In a way, new members are some of your best members. They’re excited about joining your association and eager to get involved. That said, just as there are things you need and want from your new members, there are things your new members need and want from you.

As you grapple for the attention of your members, you’re probably finding the competition growing increasingly stiff. The good news is members continue to look to the associations to which they belong as the go-to sources (more than 60 percent) for training, education and professional development. Traditionally, in many associations, thinking about the future and doing strategic planning is an elitist space. Few are allowed to participate. The CEO (and possibly the chair) are the visionaries at the table. The facilitator is brilliant. The board is committed. Together they determine your association's future. The rest of your association members and staff are supposed to implement that which was determined. Members are the receivers of the brilliant strategic outputs. Ideally, members will excitedly embrace whatever was decided for them. Unfortunately, that’s not reality.

Associations value member input. One-third of organizations accept 60 percent or more of the proposals, indicating either a low number of submissions or very forgiving quality filters. About 62 percent close off submissions eight months or longer before the conference. These longer timelines were created when information moved a heck of a lot slower. Widely used by associations as a tool for crowdsourcing the meat-and-potatoes education content for annual conferences, the call for speakers and sessions doesn’t need to be an arduous process. We’ve compiled the current best practices to achieve efficiencies, which, more importantly, result in better-quality educational offerings.
