ISAE Executive Director Sara Decatoire was recently appointed to the Association Forum’s Public Policy and Advocacy Committee. Besides Illinois issues, they review national and City of Chicago concerns centered around our industry. Look to ISAE to provide updates and advocacy activities coming from this committee. This past week Associate Director Aaron McEvoy was one of about 100 association leaders to attend a Town Hall with U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi sponsored by Association Forum. Please review his call to action. McEvoy attended another Town Hall by U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis. McEvoy made sure that Davis was keenly aware of ISAE’s position regarding the inclusion of ALL 501(c ) organizations in the next CARES Act. Again go to the Call to Action on what you, your organization, and your entire membership should be doing. Thank you.

Association Success
If there’s one thing the last couple of months as global citizens has taught us, it’s that things are a heck of a lot more complicated than we may have liked to think at the beginning of 2020. In the association space, another thing that’s gotten more clear is how we can no longer look at people through a binary lens anymore. No longer is someone just a member or a non-member; our organizations should instead be thinking of the fuzzier lines between our groups of stakeholders and how, in this new future, we can provide value to all of them.

As many people in Washington know, the COVID-19 crisis launched an advocacy boom. What they may not realize is that it is far from over. As Congress considered a $2 trillion stimulus bill — the largest in U.S. history — hundreds of organizations scrambled to ensure that lawmakers understood and addressed their needs, whether that meant safety equipment, financial support, tax relief or other necessities. Trade associations led that charge.

The world’s in need of unified leadership now more than ever. That can start on an association level. Many of you may be working from home, but as a leader, you’re called on to do a variety of things: Diffuse the situation. Put a glimmer of hope in the hearts of the downtrodden. Calm the masses. To some, it may sound like a job suited for the greatest movie protagonist – but this, folks, is reality. Our leaders must see beyond the negativity. And when dealing with COVID-19, our leaders are seeing the ultimate test – a type of challenge that no one has had to deal with before.

Some organizations are getting feedback that they are sending too many COVID-related emails, or not enough. To readers, the association may seem too worried or not worried enough.
