  • House and Senate adjourn from spring session
    The House adjourned from its Spring Session at around 7:50 PM and the Senate adjourned for the day at 10:30 PM on Friday, May 30. The Senate returned at 12:02 AM on Saturday, May 31 and passed the roads and bridges capital bill (HB 3794) then adjourned its Spring Session at about 12:15 AM on Saturday, May 31, 2014. When a bill passes both houses, the chamber of origin has thirty days to prepare and present it to the Governor (enrolled form.) Once the Governor has received a bill, he has sixty days to act on it by approving it or vetoing it.

    Bills to Note
    Budget: HB 6060 (FY 14 supplemental & FY 15,) HB 6093 (education,) HB 6094 (higher education,) HB 6095 & 6096 (various agencies,) and HB 6097 (GA, Officers & various agencies;)
    General Obligation (GO) Bond: SB 3224;
    Budget Implementation (BIMP): SB 220;
    Capital Projects: HB 3793 –capital projects for schools, water projects, (and $ to specific agency for back pay & $ to Chicago teacher pensions) & HB 3794 - capital bill which provides $1.1 billion to shovel ready road and bridge repairs.

    Veto Session
    The adjournment resolution (HJR 104) calls for the return of the House on November 19 or at the call of the Speaker. It calls for the return of the Senate on the same day or at the call of the Senate President. The Governor may call the chambers back for special session if needed. Attached is a file which contains both chambers’ Veto Session calendars.

    November 4 – General Election – State Holiday
    November 7 – House Perfunctory Session
    November 11 – Veteran’s Day – State Holiday
    November 19, 20 & 21 – First Week of Veto Session – Both Chambers
    November 27 & 28 – Thanksgiving and the day after – State Holiday
    December 2, 3 & 4 – Second Week of Veto Session – Both Chambers

    Finding creative ways to raise non-dues revenue

    Each year, the question of whether to renew membership begs a greater question: Does the association I belong to provide me with sufficient value? In order to create the compelling value that members desire, many associations have to generate more funds than what comes through membership dues. Associations turn to sponsors looking for a handout. This sets up a dynamic where the fundraiser feels embarrassed and lacks confidence in the request, and the potential sponsor feels imposed upon and reluctant to give.

But the value of connection isn’t in paying your money and getting added to the membership roll.     A peek into some of the latest association sponsorship trends
    Associations Now
    More associations are reporting increased revenue from sponsorships. But the news that nearly 40 percent more associations saw an increase in this type of revenue in 2013 compared to 2011 was not terribly surprising to sponsorship expert Pamela Strother, a principal at Sponsorship Specialists. After the recession, when many associations saw membership dues and meetings revenue drop, it became increasingly imperative for them to diversify and develop more customized and well-crafted sponsorship programs, she said. And as the IEG study demonstrates, “more and more associations are getting serious about that.”
