ISAE Summer School Starts Tomorrow
|
   |
The first Summer School Class is scheduled for 2pm – 3:30pm on Thursday, June 25. The topic will be a roundtable discussion with our CVB and hotelier partners on how we get back to in person meetings and feel confident and safe in doing so.
The second course will be the following week on, July 1. Allison Lundberg is the Manager of Marketing and Communication at the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine based in Chicago. She will be talking about “Turning your meeting into an Experience”.
Summer School will run through August. Look to future newsletters, the website, and our social media outlets (Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter) for more information.
Each Summer School Class is inclusive. You can take one or all classes.
Governor JB Pritzker today released plans to safely continue reopening businesses and industries as Illinois moves into Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois plan. Phase 4 allows for the safe reopening or expansion of several key business segments – such as health and fitness, movies and theater, museums and zoos, as well as indoor dining at restaurants. Phase 4 also allows for expanded gathering sizes, increasing the limit from 10 in Phase 3, to 50 people or fewer (or 50% of room capacity, whichever is smaller). This expanded gathering limit extends to key activities like meetings, events, and funerals.

Please read the joint letter to Governor J.B. Pritzker regarding events/gathering. In the letter we request that, “Rather than a set cap on meetings and events having more than 50 people, we ask that you set the attendance limit as 50% of fire-code capacity of the room or venue where the gathering is held.”
Also review a letter from Randy Witter and the end of session report from the ISAE Lobbying Team of McGuireWoods Consulting, LLC and Cook-Witter, Inc.
The deadline to add your organization to ASAE’s community sign-on letter is extended to Monday, June 29th.

None of us are as smart as all of us. We need each other more than ever. ISAE has been around for over
55 years. Like your association it has had its ups and downs. Yet like your association it’s the members, it’s the volunteer leaders, it’s that collective of individuals coming together to lift each other up that in turn lifts up the association and the profession.
You will see from this pictographic the parts (cogs) that currently are a part of ISAE membership. ISAE staff and volunteer leaders are constantly reviewing what ISAE offers to remain relevant and responsive to members and the association profession as a whole. We keep our mission to the forefront in all that we do. ISAE’s mission is “Promote excellence and advance leadership in the Illinois association community.”
Special kudos to the Communications Committee, especially Board liaison, Deann French and committee member Rachel Romines for the design and effort going into our new branding campaign.

How We Lead
As we begin to come out of the coronavirus pandemic and run smack into the turmoil around continuing racism in our country, I think it’s a good time to review an essential leadership skill: listening.

Though virtual conversations will never be as powerful as being with someone live, your success depends on how fast you create an environment where people feel comfortable enough to say what is on their minds.

Associations Now
Subscription boxes, once seen as a fading trend, are showing signs of resilience during the COVID-19 era. Associations might consider the idea as a way to surprise and delight members when in-person interactions can’t happen.

From time to time, prices have to go up. You’ve experienced this on the consumer end, and now, you may be experiencing this on the producer (or provider) end. The tricky part is relaying that news to your members. How do you do it without 1) upsetting them, and 2) pushing them away?

Your website is the hub of online member engagement. It’s where your members go to access content, view and register for upcoming events (especially all the virtual ones we’re having nowadays), interact with other members and so on. So, having a good website — one your members find valuable and easy to use — is of utmost importance. But how do you know if your website is performing as it should be?

It’s one thing to make short-term budget pivots in response to changing conditions in challenging times. But, how will your association approach budgeting in general when economic times are tough and you’re not sure how to plan for tomorrow?

People used to say associations weren’t good at change. No one is saying that now! In the last few months, you’ve turned remote work into business as usual. Many of you have created new virtual education and networking events for members along with new revenue streams. Now, most likely, your staff and leadership are identifying the changes you can make and the steps you can take for your association to become more inclusive. Whenever you're undergoing change, whether it’s a technology project or a diversity and inclusion initiative, success is dependent on how well you communicate and involve stakeholders in the work.

By Robert C. Harris
The executive director warned, "You should know we have a divided board." The concept was foreign to me. A board is a governing body authorized by law to serve the membership, advance the mission and make best use of resources. Members expect results from the leadership team. When I hear of a divided board, I imagine disunity, disagreement, conflicting interests and highly emotional discussions. I asked him to explain, "What is a divided board?"

It takes a lot to get to the top of an organization: a high IQ, emotional intelligence, technical competence, and a variety of personal characteristics, such as fortitude and resilience. Even with those qualities, many leaders fail at the top job — often because they don’t know how to get the organization to do what they want. What they lack — and what successful leaders embody, down to their marrow — is organizational intelligence.

New social distancing requirements for live events inevitably generate higher costs while impairing revenue. Will the first live events even be financially viable? Planners will need to find ways to mitigate the costs, maximize the reach, and boost revenue.

COVID-19 has changed how we work with, educate, and engage members, and some of those changes will be long-lasting, creating pain points for associations that may be struggling with canceled courses and events, as well as navigating the current online-only environment. With everything moving online, how do you keep members engaged?
