10 things you need to know about non-dues revenue, part 2
Association Adviser
As we discussed in Part 1, there are more ways than ever for associations to communicate with members, so it’s only natural to assume there are more ways than ever for associations to make the cash register ring. But, it’s not that simple. The key is finding the right balance between the shiny new objects that Next Gen seems to crave and legacy communications vehicles such as conferences, print magazines, newsletters and directories — the legacy channels that continue to rack up big points with longstanding members and suppliers even in this digital age.

8 terribly common association breaches and breakdowns
Midcourse Corrections
Sadly, and all too commonly, many associations appear to suffer from the equivalent of attention deficit disorder. If you know someone with ADD, you know what happens when he or she exerts energy in the absence of focus, goals and vision. Many associations are like this as well. They suffer from Organizational-ADD. It all starts with the executive brain — the association’s leadership. This includes volunteer leaders — advisors, board, committee chairs, committee members — and staff. What is required is leadership that pays attention to what is important, inhibiting things that will not help or hurt the organization, and staying current.
Is your association making these 4 common social media mistakes?
MemberClicks
Social media is still in its infancy and a lot of associations are just starting to get their stride – engaging members and moving prospects down the sales/membership funnel. But these mistakes are so common you’ve probably already made one today. Here’s what you need to stop now and why they’re hurting you more than your think.

Why it's so hard for us — and boards — to plan ahead
BBC
“What are we going to be in 10 years?” It is one of the most challenging questions that any organization can ask itself. It’s also one of the hardest. You’ve heard plenty of simple, yet meaningless, platitudes in response. “We are forward-thinking” or “We’re going to be the biggest player in our sector”, but if organizations or companies really want to be successful in the years to come, their executives and boards need to put some real work into answering the question. Of course, that’s easier said than done.
Finding the roots of true engagement
The Demand Networks
Outside our visible transactions with a favorite service provider — frequent purchases, the formal classes we attend at a university or our association’s annual conferences and journals — there is a secret web of personal motivations and values that drive our loyalty to them. Sure we may love our association’s mission or the prestige of our university but what converts us into committed members, customers or donors lies in the informal, personal, unique experiences and relationships that resonate with our motivations and give us outcomes that make a difference in some aspect of our lives.
New association virtual events report released
Tagoras
Clearly we are still in the early days of virtual events as a trend, but the use of this format across a diverse range of organizations — and its continued use by most who have tried it — suggests that virtual events will become a mainstay of association education and events going forward.
