Patients with chronic kidney disease worry about the long-term consequences for potential donors and frequently feel unworthy of such a self-sacrificing gift, Camilla Hanson and her colleagues reported online Dec. 1 in Transplantation.
Micafungin noninferior to standard prophylaxis after liver transplantation
Healio
Data from the Liver Transplant European Study into the Prevention of Fungal Infection, or TENPIN, suggest that micafungin is noninferior to standard treatments as prophylaxis in liver transplant recipients at high risk for invasive fungal infection. In addition, micafungin (Mycamine, Astellas), an echinocandin drug, was associated with better renal function compared with standard regimens, TENPIN investigators wrote in Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Kidney disease on the rise, but patients on dialysis or with transplant living longer
Nephrology News & Issues
Fewer new cases of end-stage renal disease are being reported in the U.S. and mortality rates are declining, indicating that patients on dialysis or with a kidney transplant are living longer.

The math of organ donation: Kidneys are an NP-hard problem
Ars Technica
The medical community has started doing "donation chains," where a group of donor-recipient pairs are matched so that everyone who receives a kidney has a paired donor that gives one to someone else.
That, as it turns out, has created its own problem: given a large pool of donors and recipients, how do you pull a set of optimized donor chains out?
Immigrants in Illinois illegally to get state-funded kidney transplants
Chicago Tribune
A new Illinois law will for the first time provide funding for kidney transplants for immigrants in the state without legal permission, as well as the annual medications needed to maintain the transplanted organs. Since the law went into effect in October, transplant centers in Illinois have been evaluating some of the 686 immigrants here illegally in the state's kidney dialysis program to see whether they are healthy enough to receive kidney transplants and placing some on kidney transplant waiting lists.

Hypothermic machine preservation facilitates successful transplantation of 'orphan' extended criteria donor livers
American Journal of Transplantation
Hypothermic machine preservation remains investigational in clinical liver transplantation. It is widely used to preserve kidneys for transplantation with improved results over static cold storage. At our center, we have used HMP in 31 adults receiving extended criteria donor livers declined by the originating United Network for Organ Sharing region ("orphan livers"). These cases were compared to ECD SCS cases in a matched cohort study design.
