Distance from pediatric kidney transplant centers may be a significant barrier in accessing care for patients and families, particularly due to the lower number of pediatric kidney transplant centers compared with the number of adult centers. We performed a retrospective cohort study using data from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients to determine the effect of distance on pediatric kidney transplant waitlist outcomes.

A 3-D printed replica kidney, from UK-based 3D printed medical model company axial3D, has facilitated a crucial transplant operation and simultaneously improved the life of the organ donor.
Surgeons at Belfast City Hospital in Northern Ireland planned the complete excision of a Bosniak 2F renal cyst using a kidney replica. The operation itself was the first such procedure performed without the need for revision surgery in Ireland.

Portal vein venoplasty with autogenous patch was a simple and safe procedure that produced satisfactory outcomes in pediatric patients with poor portal vein characteristics who underwent living donor liver transplantation, according to a recently published study.
“Our novel [portal vein] venoplastic technique enlarges a hypoplastic portal vein through the insertion of an autogenous portal vein patch down to the site of normal size, which can be the confluence of the portal vein and the coronary vein,” Mingxuan Feng, MD, said.

Have racial/ethnic disparities in the receipt of live donor kidney transplantation (LDKT) narrowed over the last 2 decades in the United States? In this study of 453 162 adult first-time kidney transplantation candidates, the cumulative incidence of LDKT receipt at 2 years after appearing on the waiting list increased from 7.0 percent in 1995 to 11.4 percent in 2014 among white patients, decreased from 3.4 percent to 2.9 percent among black patients, decreased from 6.8 percent to 5.9 percent among Hispanic patients, and increased from 5.1 percent to 5.6 percent among Asian patients, which represent a significant increase in racial/ethnic disparities over time.

Treatment modality education can offer many important benefits to patients and their families. Evidence suggests such education can increase use of home dialysis, reduce catheter use, decrease 90-day mortality, and increase transplantation. While these benefits are encouraging, not all patients are offered options education and when they are, it may not be presented in a way that is immediately applicable to them and their lives.
