It is no surprise that nurse staffing is a subject of contention. After all, it is a highly complex issue regardless of the setting-acute care or outpatient. Many organizations focus solely on the inpatient issues surrounding immediate staffing concerns and fewer resources on the act of scheduling. Research shows, for instance, inpatient charge nurses spend up to 90 percent of their day on staffing-related issues.

The journal Surgery last year published an opinion piece that discussed surgeons’ use of social media. Whether you love it, hate it, or are completely indifferent to social media, this piece was an enlightening read.
The authors, members of Society of University Surgeons’ Social and Legislative Committee, approached the use of social media in medicine and specifically in surgical practices as an inevitable step. They presented social media as a continuation of or surrogate for surgery’s frequent morbidity and mortality conferences.

A transplant surgeon says the lack of organs is "a national health crisis." Registering donors is "part of our responsibility as caregivers," says an executive of a state hospital association that has developed a registry program. After years of stagnation, organ donations are up and organizations that collect organs for transplantation and the hospitals they work with say their partnerships have been the key to getting the numbers up.

Today, one of the biggest challenges is practical: moving organs from one hospital to another. Organ transplantation is a race. A harvested heart, for example, must be transplanted within four to six hours. In India, the race can be slow going. The number of cars on the road is the most glaring problem. Inner-city traffic is “horrific,” says K.R. Balakrishnan, chief of cardiac surgery at Fortis Malar Hospital in Chennai. When you’re on streets without operating lights, a left turn may take 45 minutes. In rainy weather, what is normally a 10-minute drive may take three hours.
