I recently had the opportunity to join a team of fellow Australians and visit various transplant units in Vietnam. Our goal was to assist with their current challenges while working with limited resources. These included establishing donor and transplant registries, increasing consent rates, and training dedicated intensive care staff. I had the opportunity to meet many committed nurses and visit their transplant units, operating theatres and intensive care units. Sharing resources such as the ITNS free patient education brochures were well received. Observing healthcare in a developing country was confrontational but also humbling and rewarding. We thank the support of the Transplant Society of Australian and New Zealand (TSANZ) and The Transplantation Society (TTS) for supporting the visit.

More than 100,000 Americans are on the organ donor list, and the vast majority need kidneys. Around 17,000 Americans actually receive a kidney transplant every year, while almost 5,000 die waiting.
New research has reported that new DAA drugs may hold the key to making many more organs available to waiting patients.

Before medical science can bioengineer human organs in a lab for therapeutic use, two remaining hurdles are ensuring genetic stability — so the organs are free from the risk of tumor growth — and producing organ tissues of sufficient volume and size for viable transplant into people. Scientists from the Cincinnati Children's Center for Stem Cell and Organoid Medicine and Yokohama City University (YCU) in Japan report in Stem Cell Reports achieving both goals with a new production method for bioengineered human gut and liver tissues.

In 2010, “John Doe” was being treated for a sexually transmitted disease at a private medical facility in New York. A nurse at the facility recognized Doe as the boyfriend of her sister-in-law. The nurse, not assigned to Doe’s care, checked Doe’s chart and learned of his diagnosis and treatment.
While Doe was waiting for his treatment, the nurse texted her sister-in-law and told her Doe was being treated for the STD. The manner in which she texted this information led the sister-in-law to believe the staff was making fun of his diagnosis and treatment. The sister-in-law immediately forwarded the messages to Doe.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has classified kratom, a botanical substance widely used as a painkiller despite agency approval, as an opioid. FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb released a statement referencing the FDA's concerns about the plant substance and its health consequences, which they said include death. Since they've been keeping tally, there have been 44 deaths reported that are considered associated with kratom, an increase from the 36 that had been reported in a November 2017 FDA advisory document.

In both the United States and the United Kingdom, primary sclerosing cholangitis rose to the leading indication for liver transplantation among patients with autoimmune diseases while the number of patients listed with primary biliary cholangitis decreased by 50 percent, according to results of a 20-year comparative analysis.
“Our examination of the numbers of patients listed for transplantation over time showed that PSC has become the dominant autoimmune indication for liver transplantation in both countries,” Gwilym James Webb, MD, from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, and colleagues wrote.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is the second most common liver cancer, and it is associated with a poor prognosis. CCA can be divided into intrahepatic, hilar, and distal. Despite the subtype, the median survival is 12-24 months without treatment. Liver transplantation (LT) is recognized worldwide as a curative option for hepatocellular carcinoma.

Vanderbilt researchers are comparing two types of weight-loss options to determine which is the most effective in helping obese patients reach a more ideal weight before undergoing kidney transplant surgery. Obesity is a two-edged sword when it comes to kidney health. Excessive weight is a key factor in the development of acute kidney disease and kidney failure, which can then lead to the need for life-saving dialysis or kidney transplant.
