ITNS
“It all began with a definite plan and a little luck of the Irish…”
So began the story of the International Society of Transplant Nurses (ITNS) at the opening of the first Annual ITNS Symposium on March 12, 1992 in Pittsburgh, PA. As co-founders of ITNS, Kandy Yarris-Newell and I kept a detailed record of our planning for ITNS — planning that began in 1989 and resulted in the launch of ITNS in 1992. We crafted a poem and slide show to share how ITNS came to be with over 300 attendees. “If you build it, they will come” became our mantra and come to Pittsburgh you did! It is a wonderful story and truly was a labor of love and passion for all things transplant, in particular a passion for transplant patient care. It’s inspiring to see that passion in all of you continuing as we move into our 25th year. READ MORE

A 26-year-old patient is the nation's first recipient of a uterus transplant, doctors from the Cleveland Clinic announced. The grueling nine-hour surgery took place recently, and the patient — who received the organ of a deceased donor — is reportedly in stable condition.
The clinic has not commented further on the first patient, but she was one of 10 women selected for the approved clinical trial of the procedure.

A recent study published in PLOS One showed that the clinician-patient relationship has an effect on healthcare outcomes. There's no denying that clinicians have a high-stress job atmosphere, but that shouldn't take away from the bedside manner given to patients. Whether you're on the phone or in person, your tone, mannerisms and appearance all take a toll on the patient. That said, it can also take a toll on your professional career.

On Nov. 22, 2015, 8-year-old Cadence Orcutt died in an unusual car crash. She was driving the car when it veered off a rural, dirt road in Wathena, Kansas, and crashed.
“I got out there and my son came running up to me,” said Crystal Fotherguill, Cadence’s aunt. “He was with one of the police officers and said to me, ‘Mommy, Cadence is hurt really bad.’”
Cadence was pronounced dead at the scene.
The next day, the Orcutt family received a phone call about recovering parts of Cadence’s body for organ donation — beginning a rapid process of giving life out of the girl’s tragic death.

The shortage of primary care physicians, particularly in rural areas, has prompted an increased reliance on so-called "advanced practice providers" such as physician assistants and nurse practitioners. But physician groups have argued that with less training and experience, these providers do not deliver the same quality of care as doctors.

Data obtained from national organ donation registries shows, since 2011, three liver transplants and three kidney transplants have been given to people who got sick after taking some kind of herbal supplement.
It comes after West Australian man Matthew Whitby spoke to the ABC after losing his liver — most likely as a result of taking a protein powder with green tea extract and a supplement containing garcinia cambogia.

The concept of entrepreneurship is currently widely understood — even the notion of nurse entrepreneurship has recently gained acceptance. However, nurse intrapreneurship receives little attention, and the nurturing of nurse intrapreneurs should be a central focus for organizations seeking innovative growth in a shifting healthcare landscape. Intrapreneurs are seen as employees who readily take "ownership" of their work; they naturally think and act innovatively.

Organ donation has been a hot political topic in the U.K. of late. Wales introduced a new rule last December that presumed that people gave permission to donate organs in the event of their death (barring a family veto), bringing it into line with the likes of Austria and Spain. The Scottish and Northern Irish parliaments have both debated private-members bills with similar proposals in recent weeks. However, the Scottish bill was voted down while the Northern Irish one was killed at the committee stage.

The whites of Weldon Bradshaw's eyes were actually yellow.
That matched his pink-turned-golden, severely jaundiced skin. An autoimmune disease called primary sclerosing cholangitis — the same that killed football great Walter Payton — had caused Bradshaw's liver to fail, and his kidneys were shutting down as a result. In the intensive care unit at VCU Medical Center in Richmond, he held on. Machines, including dialysis, were keeping him alive, says the now 67-year-old Bradshaw, who lives in Richmond, Virginia. He'd been told six days prior by his transplant surgeon that without a new liver, he wouldn't survive the week.

From October 2014 to September 2015, more Americans died than during the same period one year earlier, according to a preliminary analysis of death records.
The age-adjusted death rate in the United States for the 12-month period ending with the third quarter of 2015 was 731.4 deaths per 100,000 population, up from a rate of nearly 720 per 100,000 during the same period a year earlier, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics.
The findings are part of the Vital Statistics Rapid Release program, a quarterly release of data on various leading causes of death in the United States, the CDC says.
