Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have developed an algorithm capable of extracting data from patient electronic health records (EHRs) to show the difference in care provided by physicians and nurses. Findings were published online Feb. 9 in the International Journal of Medical Informatics. Physicians and nurses have a collabrative relationship when it comes to patient care and provide specific care based on their role. In this study, researchers used computer technology to compare patient care provided by nurses and physicians using EHR data.

Preconception renal function predicted preterm birth in pregnant women who underwent prior liver transplantation, according to a recently published study.
“Our results show that the number of live births is increasing in parallel to the number of women of reproductive age undergoing LT. Moreover, the live birth rate has also increased significantly over the last three decades,” Tiong Y. Lim, MD, from King's College Hospital, London, and colleagues wrote.

As healthcare moves toward team-based practice, transplantation just might be in the vanguard of this movement. “The future of transplant is not as hierarchical as it used to be,” observes Monica Morrison, PA-C, in the Department of Transplant Surgery at the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) in Seattle. In accordance with this thinking, Ms. Morrison is among those who feel that advanced-practice providers (APPs) could prove instrumental in the formation of transplantation teams looking to improve quality and develop best practices.

A UT Southwestern study in mice provides new clues about how a class of anti-rejection drugs used after organ transplants may also slow the progression of early-stage Alzheimer's disease. The researchers studied how the connections between neurons — synapses — are lost early in the course of the disease. This loss likely causes the behavioral and memory changes that occur as the disease develops, said Dr. James Malter, Chairman of Pathology and corresponding author of the Science Signaling study.
