The ACT (Australian Capital Territory) Renal Transplant Service is a part of the Renal Network. The Renal Network is an amalgamation of the ACT and Southern NSW (New South Wales) Local Health District Renal Services. The Renal Network provide renal care to patient across these jurisdiction including Renal Replacement Therapy and transplant care.

Dialysis and transplant patients face nearly three times the risk of dying from cancer as compared with the general population, according to new research. Previous research has shown that patients who are on dialysis or have received a kidney transplant are at higher risk of developing cancer, but there have been few studies to assess cancer mortality rates among these patients. To investigate, Eric H. Au, M.B.B.S., of the University of Sydney and colleagues compared the cancer-related mortality rates in kidney transplant recipients and dialysis patients with those of the general population.

According to a study published in Hepatology, small dense LDL cholesterol independently predicted cardiovascular disease events among liver transplant recipients. “The present study employs detailed lipoprotein sub-particles to link specific proteins with CVD outcomes using a prospective cohort and provides valuable information that can be readily incorporated into clinical practice to hopefully improve clinical outcomes,” Mohammad B. Siddiqui, MD, from the Virginia Commonwealth University, and colleagues wrote.

The National Surgical Quality Program Transplant program was designed by transplant surgeons from the ground up to track post-transplant outcomes beyond basic recipient and graft survival. After an initial pilot phase, the program has expanded to 29 participating sites and enrolled more than 4,300 recipient-donor pairs into the database, including 1,444 completed liver transplant cases.
