It's a fact. Organ transplants save lives. It is also the reason why thousands of Canadians will be celebrating National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week.
There are almost 600 people in BC waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, and almost 500 of those are waiting for a kidney. Sadly many of these patients will die waiting.
Everyone can be a hero and do their part to help make a second chance possible for those waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.

The media is full of statistics that warn of the looming global crisis of the aging nursing workforce. We know the average age of a nurse is now 47 years old and 55 percent of the RN workforce is age 50 or older. National Donate Life Month is a time to celebrate those who have been donors and given the gift of life. It’s also an opportunity to educate people about the difference they can make by choosing to be an organ, eye and tissue donor.
As a transplant nephrologist for almost 30 years, I’ve treated a lot of patients and witnessed first-hand thousands of lives saved and enhanced through organ donation. I’ve been lucky enough to see patients grow up and go to college. To live long enough to meet their grandchildren. To go back to work and enjoy a fulfilling career. To fall in love, get married and start their own families.

When Elena Sablina's daughter Alina was killed in a car crash in Moscow two years ago, she was devastated.
One month later, Sablina accidentally discovered from a forensic report that six of her 19-year-old daughter's organs, including her heart and kidneys, had been removed for transplant.
"I was shocked that organs were taken from my child without my permission," Sablina told The Associated Press.

The stark reality for many people waiting to receive an organ transplant is that they just might die before a compatible donor is found.
But a new procedure for kidney transplants recently detailed in The New England Journal of Medicine may bring renewed hope.
While there are currently more than 100,000 people on the national waiting list for a kidney, the number of actual transplant operations performed in 2015 was just 17,878, according to a report by the Associated Press.
