Considering the ongoing opioid epidemic in the United States, researchers confirmed that survival rates among transplantation recipients who received organs from patients who died of drug overdose were similar to survival among recipients from donors who died of other causes.
Josef Stehlik, MD, MPH, medical director of the Heart Transplant Program at the University of Utah Health, told Healio Gastroenterology and Liver Disease that because donations from drug overdose cases often occur in hospitals that are not transplant centers, there may be bias against their use.

Racial disparity in waitlisting prevents many Americans from getting the kidney transplants they need. Healthcare providers at dialysis facilities play an important role in kidney transplant waitlisting, but very little is known about their level of awareness of these racial disparities. Results from a new study suggest that many providers are unaware of racial disparities in kidney transplant waitlisting. Specifically, they found that awareness was low among white providers and nurse managers.

As the opioid epidemic increases the number of organ donors dying from drug overdoses, an analysis published in The New England Journal of Medicine found this increase has led to more organ transplants in the last five years.
The researchers investigated how drug-related deaths affected organ donations and patient outcomes by looking at data on donors and transplantation over a 17-year period in the U.S. and compared it to data from Eurotransplant, a collective of all transplantation centers in eight European countries.

Among organ transplant patients, those receiving new lungs face a higher rate of organ failure and death compared with people undergoing heart, kidney and liver transplants. One of the culprits is inflammation that damages the newly transplanted lung.
Now, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago have uncovered the precise cells that flow into and harm the lung soon after transplant.

When we use the word "indefatigable" in conjunction with the word "nurse," it is an almost perfect pairing of noun and adjective. Indefatigable can be defined as industrious, tireless or unflagging, and that is a powerfully accurate description of the majority of hard-working nurses who serve as the very mitochondria of healthcare. If healthcare employers want these nurse mitochondria to be their most effective, they need to double down on their nurses when it comes to retention.

Most severe alcoholic hepatitis transplant patients achieve 1-year survival
May 22, 2018
A recent survey of U.S. transplant centers found excellent 1-year survival rates for patients who underwent liver transplantation for severe alcoholic hepatitis, according to data presented at a media press conference for Digestive Disease Week 2018.
“Historically, transplant centers would not consider liver transplantation as an option unless a patient had abstained from drinking alcohol for 6 months,” Saroja Bangaru, MD, said.
