Learn from your peers, hear from thought leaders, get inspired, discover new solutions, and more from 28-30 September 2018 in Rosemont, IL. You and your team need to be at this symposium!
Congratulations to ITNS member Gwen Elise McNatt, PhD, APRN, CNN, FNP-BC, who has been named to the 2018 class of new fellows of the American Academy of Nursing. Gwen will be honored at a ceremony to be held during the Academy's annual policy conference, Transforming Health, Driving Policy, which will take place Nov. 1-3, 2018 in Washington, D.C.
Fellow selection criteria include evidence of significant contributions to nursing and health care, and sponsorship by two current Academy fellows. Applicants are reviewed by a panel comprised of elected and appointed fellows, and selection is based, in part, on the extent the nominee's nursing career has influenced health policies and the health and wellbeing of all. New fellows will be eligible to use the FAAN credential (fellow of the American Academy of Nursing) after the induction ceremony takes place in November. For more information about the American Academy of Nursing and the 2018 policy conference, visit http://www.AANnet.org/2018.

When Nathan Hansen, RN, was still in nursing school at the State College of Florida, he often used YouTube videos to help him study. While watching videos one day, he saw a story about a young man who got the call to donate bone marrow to help save someone’s life. At the time, Hansen didn’t know it, but one day, he too would get that call.

Liver transplant surgery is a widely accepted procedure for patients with failing livers due to cancer, cirrhosis, or other diseases. It has a high success rate with up to 70% of patients surviving for five years or more after the surgery. However, the demand for livers massively outstrips supply, with one in five patients in the United Kingdom dying while still waiting for a new liver.

Someone is added to the national transplant waitlist every 10 minutes, according to UNOS, and an estimated 20 people die every day waiting for a transplant. Deceased donors save thousands of lives each year, as four out of five donated organs come from deceased donors. Now, an increasing number of organs are coming from donors who died from drug overdoses.

Winding down another speech, I was certain I had laid out the most comprehensive, easy-to-follow primer for attaining the most sought-after nursing quality in 2018 — personally and professionally rejuvenated, wake-up-tomorrow-totally-different, “I am nurse” nurse empowerment.
That is, until Elizabeth, red-faced and yelling, stood up in the audience and nailed me. “You’ve been talking all evening, and you didn’t tell me how to be an empowered nurse,” she said.

Cancer development after kidney transplant (KT) has become a major problem, and currently, it is one of the primary causes of death in this population. Urological cancers after KT such as prostate cancer (PCa) have also increased, partly due to the increasing age of recipients and prolonged survival. PCa is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, accounting for 15 percent of all cancers.

Long-term immunosuppressive therapy can significantly increase the risk and mortality of skin cancer in organ transplant recipients (OTRs). Previous research shows that specific educational interventions can boost the use of sunscreen and other sun protection measures in OTRs. A new research letter shows that merely participating in a skin cancer research study for at least a year — even one without specific educational interventions — can increase the practice of multiple sun protection behaviors in recipients.
