The likelihood of a deceased donor kidney being procured and transplanted may depend on the day of the week it becomes available, according to a study published in the issue of Kidney International.
Sumit Mohan, M.D., MPH, from the Division of Nephrology, Columbia University Medical Center, New York City, and colleagues report that as many as one in five deceased donor kidneys may be discarded because of the so-called "weekend effect," leading experts to call for a reevaluation of resource allocation in transplant centers and the factors that contribute to utilization decisions.

Team training of healthcare employees can reduce patient mortality by 15 percent, according to a new study from Rice University, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the University of Central Florida, the U.S. Department of Defense and the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center.
"Saving Lives: A Meta-Analysis of Team Training in Health Care" found that team training can also reduce medical errors by 19 percent. Team training is an instructional strategy aimed at improving team-based knowledge, skills, attitudes and problem-solving interactions.

A multicenter team of researchers led by Barbara Murphy, M.D., of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has identified a panel of genes which can help predict whether a transplanted kidney will later develop fibrosis, an injury which can cause the organ to fail.
